CHRISTOPHER RICHARD WYNNE NEVINSON C.R.W., A. R.A. (1889-1946) Southwark mezzotint on laid watermarked paper, with margins, signed in pencil `C.R.W.Nevinson` (lower right margin) and titled by another hand `Southwark` (lower left margin) Pl. 8 7/8in x 5 7/8in (22.5 x 15.1cm) This mezzotint ( sometimes known as `Limehouse`) depicts Thames barges with warehouse buildings beyond, 1918. The subtle tonal gradations heighten the dark mood of this industrial subject, with its evocations of grime, smog and claustrophobia. Other scarce impressions of this print are in Harvard Art Museum (Rosenberg Gift M4538), The British Museum , Yale., and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Nevinson worked as an ambulance driver during the First World War, but was invalided out in 1916.Later he worked for a short time at the Front as an Official War Artist. He suffered a nervous breakdown in 1918 the year `Southwark` was produced. Nevinson made three mezzotints of British subjects in 1918. .Titled `From an Office Window`; Wind; and Southwark (Limehouse) They were evidently produced at about the same time. It is unclear what at the time led him to take up what was at the time virtually an obsolete medium., though the process of print making may have given him some relief from his medical condition.`The results are probably the finest British mezzotints of this century `(Francis Carey and Antony Griffiths, Avant-garde British Printmaking 1914-1960) "Southwark, a mezzotint done in the last year of the war, draws on the lessons of Cubism while reverting tofFiguration, and the faceted handling learned from Severini. The use of toned blacks in this urban landscape is worthy of Seurat`s Charcoal Sketches". (Into the Vortex - British Avant-Garde on the eve of WWI, New York Times 2004. Souren Melikian)
