PILKINGTON, John Carteret (d. 1763). The Real Story of John Carteret Pilkington. Written by Himself. London: [no publisher], 1760. 4to (260 x 210mm). Folding mezzotint portrait of Mrs Laetitia Pilkington (some spotting and staining, more pronounced towards the end). Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards with vellum corners, spine gilt with black morocco lettering-piece (one lettering-piece lacking, joints split, rubbed and lightly stained). Provenance: Weston Library (armorial bookplate); Lord Bradford (old signature on title). FIRST EDITION. The Preface is typically self-deprecating: "... the reader is to expect nothing in the following pages but entertainment. If I can give that in a rational and inoffensive manner, so as to kill two winter afternoons, I see no reason any of my subscribers will have to regret their purchase, as two Italian operas would cost the same money, for which they have nothing afterwards to shew; whereas, after this has been read, the binding, gilding, and lettering, will render it a pretty ornament to a library" (p.iv).
