A Worcester (Flight, Barr & Barr) Princess Charlotte Breakfast Service pattern teacup and saucer, decorated with elaborate panels of flowers and insects reserved on a lime-green ground, gilt gadroon bordered rims, gilt factory marks. This pattern was used in 1816 for a breakfast service made for H.R.H. Princess Charlotte upon her marriage to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coberg-Saalfeld. This example is clearly a teacup and not a breakfast cup so we cannot say with any certainty that this cup and saucer was made for the Princess and factory records do not survive from this period. HOBBS JACK: (1882-1963) English Cricketer. Series of four A.Ls.S., Jack Hobbs and J. B. Hobbs, eleven pages (total), 8vo (one letter with the upper portion of letterhead removed, without loss of text) and 4to, various places (London, Madras and Bombay), 1st February-26th March 1934, to [Ernest Edwin] Speight. Hobbs writes concerning a fountain pen, explaining that he will obtain a new Waterman pen for his correspondent when he returns to England, also stating that he will be happy to meet Speight`s brother in law at the Oval (`Perhaps he will attend one of the matches in which case I shall be glad to find him a seat if he asks for me at the players room door`) and asking Speight if he would be kind enough to obtain some Hyderabad postage stamps, explaining `My boy is now a keen collector & writes asking me to try & get him a set of Indian stamps` and also expressing interest in his correspondent`s own stamp collection, referring to a golfing holiday he had taken in Penzance and informing Speight that `You were wise not to play cricket while it was so hot, especially as so many runs were scored.` One letter is accompanied by the original envelope. FLEETWOOD-SMITH CHUCK: (1908-1971) Australian Cricketer. A.L.S., Fleetwood-Smith, two pages, 8vo, Swansea, 2nd August 1938, to Herbert Webbern, a young English cricket fan, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Metropole. The cricketer announces `I have heard that you were looking forward to seeing the match here, and had the rotten luck to become ill….` and continues `from what I hear about your own ability as a cricketer if you stick at it, I feel sure that one day you will finish up playing for your country and then for England.` Fleetwood-Smith further asks `Have you enjoyed the Tests? We were lucky to win at Leeds, and it was a very exciting game. Naturally you`ll be supporting England & I`m sure that the last Test will be very interesting, and we hope to win, though England have a very fine side.` In concluding he remarks `I hope that I`ll see you one day in Australia as a player of the M.C.C.` Accompanied by the original envelope (only FR) hand addressed by Fleetwood-Smith. Very slight, minor age wear, about VG. The recipient of this letter had been promised by his father that he would be taken to see Australia play against Glamorgan in August 1938, but instead unfortunately landed up in hospital. On hearing the news, Fleetwood-Smith responded with the present letter, and also visited the home of the young cricket fan, playing `cricket` in the garden with his brother and friend.

ALI & NICKLAUS: ALI MUHAMMAD (1942- ) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion & NICKLAUS JACK (1940- ) American Golfer who holds the record for the most victories in major championships. An excellent, extremely rare signed colour 13.5 x 11 photograph by both Ali and Nicklaus individually, the image depicting the two men standing in an amusing full length pose together on the PGA Championship golf course at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky. Signed by both sportsmen with their names alone in bold black ink to light areas of the image. Matted in green and ivory alongside two engraved plaques, one reading The Greatest meets The Greatest and the other certifying that the signed photograph is number two in a strictly limited edition of eleven. 22 x 22.5 overall. VG The image records the first time Ali and Nicklaus met, in 1996. The photograph was taken by Peter Turrell and is believed to be one of only eleven prints worldwide. The engraved plaque states that four of the prints are in the private collections of Ali and Nicklaus, leaving only seven available to purchase.

A.L.S., Basil Rathbone, two pages, 8vo, Central Park West, New York, 13th October 1962, to Miss Anne Blair. Rathbone states that he will be leaving New York next Thursday for Kansas City `on a long tour of my one man show.` and continues `My appearance in Washington on Nov. 29 & 30 with Mr. Beck and his period music programme at the Library of Congress should not be confused with my later appearance on Apl. 4th next year with my own one man show at Howard University.` The actor further seeks his correspondent`s advice as to a good hotel in Washington, `I hate the big noisy ones! & I like to be comfortable!. The Carlton used to be good. Then someone told me about a charming new hotel in Georgetown-sort of "period" with some atmosphere & probably horribly expensive!`.
