HAMILTON EMMA: (1761-1815) Mistress of Lord Horatio Nelson. Fine A.L.S., E. Hamilton, one page, 4to, Temple Place, n.d. (c.1814), to an unidentified correspondent. Hamilton writes, with her usual lack of punctuation, in full, `I am only just up after an illness of six weeks pray call on me I have promised myself much happiness in seeing you I have fretted myself to death by a villan (sic) who stole my letters having published them & if I was to appear before the allmighty (sic) God this moment I knew nothing of their publication but more of this when wee meet. God bless you pray your ever affectionate` and in a brief postscript remarks `How wretched I am`. A rare letter of good content. VG After Lord Nelson`s death in 1805, Emma Hamilton fell deeply into debt, the government ignoring Nelson`s wishes that his mistress and their daughter, Horatia, be provided for. As the letter confirms, Nelson`s letters to Hamilton were stolen in 1814 and published as The Letters of Lord Nelson to Lady Hamilton. The publication resulted in Hamilton being wrongly accused of selling the correspondence for her own gain and public and official sentiment turned firmly against her. The following summer Hamilton, in the company of her daughter, was spending time in King`s Bench, a virtual debtor`s prison. On her release in the autumn she fled England, and the demands of creditors, settling in Calais. It was here that she died in January 1815, a few months short of her 50th birthday.

Wellington encloses a memorial (no longer present) `from a Gentleman of considerable landed property at Guarda, praying that a sum of money may be lent to him in aid of the purchase of Cattle to replace those which he lost during the late invasion and also a Memm. Which I have received from the Paymaster General regarding a number of orphans….who have hitherto been supported by a subscription of the principal inhabitants.` Wellington requests that Stuart present the papers before the committee `appointed to distribute the bounty voted by Parliament for the relief of the Portuguese sufferers.` The left edge is slightly irregularly torn, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG.
