He suffered a serious injury whilst flensing, that is stripping the blubber from seals and was invalided out of the service on his return from the expedition. Scott would later write (in 1909) that Dell `proved himself one of the best men in the Expedition. He was always cheerful, hard working and very intelligent`. When the First World War broke out Dell re-enlisted, serving in the Dardanelles and the North Sea, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He then joined the Shackleton-Rowett Antarctic Expedition of 1921-22, as boatswain and electrician on board the `Quest`. He was one of the last people to see Shackleton alive, sewed him into his canvas burial bag, acted as a pall bearer at his funeral, and made the cross that originally marked his grave on South Georgia, before the erection of a more permanent memorial. In later years Dell was employed on a country estate in north Somerset, and in the Second World War he served with the S.O.E. assisting with its coastal intelligence work. He died in 1968.
