The title notes "The Illustrations to this work obtained a First-class Award at the Fine Art Exhibition (Chokokwai) held in Uyeno Park, Tokyo, September, 1897."

[Atkinson (Hoffman)] Exercises in the Yokohama Dialect, "Twenty Second Thousandth", original wrappers, light creasing and soiling, Yokohama, 1879; and 4 others, comprising the 1953 reissue of the same 3 guide/handbooks for Japan at the turn of the century, 8vo & 12mo (5)⁂ A humorous guide to Yokohama Pidgin Japanese, a dialect that developed in the late 19th century for communication between Japanese and foreigners. Though the booklet claims to be a later, revised and enlarged printing it seems likely that this claim is spurious and that this is in fact the first edition.

With offices in London and Sydney, and with a solid reputation for their children's books, the firm was an important client for Hasegawa in the 1880's. The books that Griffith, Farran contracted with Hasegawa to produce were more in the Western vein, with sewn and glued spines, and with Griffith, Farran identification on the cover." - Sharf.

Ada" to Mount Fuji on upper cover, [not in Sharf], [1908], colour woodblock illustrations, bound and stitched Japanese-style, original pictorial wrappers, some light marking or toning but very good generally, small 4to & 8vo, Tokyo, Hasegawa (3)⁂ A good group of these scarce and attractive calendars with excellent association inscriptions from an author whose work was published by Hasegawa to her fellow teacher of music in Japan. Emily Patton arrived in Japan from Australia where she had worked as a music teacher with Ada Bloxham as one of her students. Bloxham subsequently travelled to London to continue her studies before returning to Australia and then travelling to Japan where she taught Tonic Sol-fa with Emily Patton.
