Harmonia quatuor Evangelistarum, 2 vol., vol.1 engraved portrait frontispiece, additional pictorial title and full-page portrait to verso of letterpress title, vol.2 half-title with full-page engraved portrait verso, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, 2 errata ff. at end of each vol., both vol. some neat underlining in brown pencil or ink and occasional contemporary ink marginalia, some spotting or mostly light staining, mostly lightly browned throughout, attractive 19th century black crushed morocco gilt, spines in compartments, upper covers with central monogram of Rev. Theodore Williams, lower covers with central arms, some scuffing and marking, rubbed, folio, Frankfurt, for Zacharias Härtel, 1652.⁂ An attractive set of these commentaries on the Four Gospels. Provenance: Rev. Theodore Williams (1785-1875), Vicar of Hendon, who amassed a magnificent library and commissioned the finest binders of his time, including Derome, Payne, Charles Lewis, and John Clarke. He sold the library in 1827 (gilt monograms to bindings).

The Ricciardetto had some influence on Byron in the writing of Beppo: A Ventian Story, written in Venice in 1817. French Poet.- Lochac (Emmanuel, known as Loschack, French writer and poet of Ukrainian origin, 1886-1956) c. 43 Autograph Letters signed to the philosopher André Devaux, c. 100pp., 8vo & 4to, Paris, Fontenay & Vincennes, 1936-56, including sending a poem, and another a signed manuscript poem, Le Rouleau de Musique, written mostly during the war years when Lochac, a Ukranian of Jewish extraction lived in hiding, mostly on various poetry questions, including an appreciation of his article on Monostiches (1936), quibbles about elisions, and other remarks on Devaux's attempts at poetry etc.; and a small quantity of others, including a letter from the poet, Jacques Arnold to Devaux, discussing efforts to promote Lochac's work, two printed offprints and published poems with manuscript dedication to Madame Devaux , typed notes on the letters from Devaux and an invitation to a Ball in aid of Russian writers at the Russian Club, 1941, a few with tears, folds, some browned, v.s., v.d. Tooke, 1684 § Letters of the Honourable Algernon Sydney to the Honourable Henry Savile, Ambassador in France, first edition, half-title, modern cloth, for R. Dodsley, 1742; and 5 others relating Sidney, his letters, works and trial, folio and 8vo (8) ⁂ Algernon Sydney (1623-1683), politician and republican political theorist - his ideas are seen as culminating in the Glorious Revolution and the founding of the United States. Although opposed to Charles I's execution he was later charged with plotting against Charles II, in part based on his most famous work, Discourses Concerning Government and was executed for treason. The first here mentioned is the first edition of Sydney's famous speech as he ascended the scaffold for execution at Tyburn.

(6)⁂ I. Joel Barlow (1754-1812) was an American poet, diplomat and politician. He lived in Paris during the early years of the French Revolution (which he supported) and the Reign of Terror, was a close friend of Thomas Paine, and became U.S. Minister for France in 1811. III. Scarce first edition by former naval officer, written in response to possible French invasion, arguing for an Anglo-Saxon type militia.

The Fairy of the Lake, A Dramatic Romance..., half-title (closed tear with paper repair), aquatint frontispiece, library stamps including to title and half-title, modern paper backed boards, 8vo, Hereford, W. H. Parker, 1801; Selections and Original Articles for Mr. Thelwall's Lectures on the Science and Practice of Elocution, ink stamp to title, some ff. with ink underlings and other markings, modern cloth, for the lecturer by J. Belcher & Son, 1806; and another later edition of the first (3)⁂ The first: scarce. Two editions appeared in 1801; OCLC gives priority to the London imprint, although both appear to have been printed in Hereford. Thelwall was a political reformer and lecturer on elocution. He was sent to the tower along with Thomas Hardy and Horne Tooke, but later found not guilty.

Radical Reformers.- Crime & Poverty.- Hunt (Henry) Investigation at Ilchester Gaol..., first edition, etched frontispiece and 5 plates, bookplate, later half-calf, Thomas Dolby, 1821; A Narrative of the Rise and Progress of the Improvements effected in His Majesty's Gaol at Ilchester, two folding engraved plans (1 loose), light browning, ?original boards, joints cracked but stitching intact, spine toned, Bath, Wood et al., 1822 § Gurney (Joseph John) Notes on a visit made to some of the Prisons in Scotland and the north of England in company with Elizabeth Fry, light spotting, ?original boards, rebacked, uncut, Edinburgh, Archibald Constable, 1819; and another, v.s. (4)⁂ I. Henry Hunt, radical orator and later MP for Preston, was imprisoned at Ilchester for his role in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. During this time he gathered evidence to present to the House of Commons against the abusive regime, particularly against the gaoler William Bridle for torture, drunkenness, rape and neglect. II. Brother of renowned prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, Gurney campaigned with his sister against capital punishment, and travelled nationally gathering material for prison reports for Parliament.

Millar; George Murray, [1832-33] bound with Loyal Reformer's Gazzette, The., 65 issues only, a broken run, [Glasgow], [Muir, Gowans & Co.], [1832-33], together 2 vol., aquatint frontispiece, some trimming to margins (no text loss), nineteenth century red half morocco, 8vo (2) ⁂ A bound collection of rare periodicals relating to the Scottish Reform Act. The Loyal Refomer's Gazette, was know from no.54 onwards as The Reformer's Gazette; it ran for most of the 1830s aimed at middle class reformers. The Radical Reformer's Gazette, was more militant, modelled after the penny papers of Henry Hetherington and similarly issued illegally without stamps. Publication was shut down three times over the course of its run, publishers changing each time.

NO RESERVE Crime prevention.- Philanthropic Society. First report of the Philanthropic Society. Instituted in London, September, 1788, for the prevention of crimes, first edition, title stained, occasional spotting, lightly browned, disbound, Sold by T. Becket, Pall Mall; T. Hookham, New Bond Street; and J. Johnson, St Paul's Church-Yard, [1789]; and another, relating to financial irregularities within the organisation, 8vo & small 4to (2)⁂ The Philanthropic Society was founded in 1788 with the intention of caring for juvenile offenders, and the offspring of convicted criminals who were either in prison, or who had been transported. It opened homes in which children in need and young offenders were trained in cottage industries. Robert Young was a founder and treasurer of the Society. He was a serial social entrepreneur and had spent time in the Fleet debtors prison. It would appear that much of the money collected by him for the organisation never actually reached its coffers; likely being diverted into other schemes in which he was involved (see second item in lot).
