A good quality mid 19th century American silver vase having ornate cast and engraved foliate decoration on a shaped raised base with inscription reading `To Mrs Frances Anne Kemble, from the Committee for the Relief of the Hungarian Exiles, New York Jan 24th 1850` the base inscribed Ball Tompkins and Black, New York, 10 1/2" high. Mrs Frances Anne Kemble (Fanny Kemble) 1809-1893, was a noted actress and author, daughter of the actor Charles Kemble, and niece of Sarah Siddons. She made her first stage appearance as Juliet at Covent Garden on 26th October 1829 and accompanied her father on a theatrical tour of the US in 1832. Returning in 1834 to marry Pierce Butler, an American and heir to one of the largest slave-holders in Georgia. witnessing the appalling conditions and treatment of the slaves led to her involvement in the abolitionist movement, a separation and eventual divorce from her husband in 1849 and, among other good causes, the support towards a group of Hungarian emigres in New York. This group of mainly educated middle nobility Hungarians emigrated to the US to escape Austrian retribution at the end of the Hungarian revolution and War of Independence in 1848-49.It was for Fanny Kemble’s support towards the emigres both individually and through the abolitionist movement, that the silver was commissioned. The firm Ball Tompkins & Black of New York succeeded the silversmith of Frederick and Josiah Marquand in 1839, continuing until 1851 when the name changed to Ball, Black and Co.
