Lot 47

A rare Vincennes ecuelle or fish broth bowl, cover and stand. c.1750, soft paste porcelain, with blue interlaced L`s to bowl and stand, no date letter, old paper collection label beneath cover, the stand of circular form with silver rim, the bowl with twin twisted branch handles and the cover with fish, shell and onion finial, all decorated in Meissen style puce camaïeu with figures in pastoral landscapes alternating with floral sprigs and sprays, the decoration enriched with gilding, with gilded dentil borders, the stand 8¾in. (22.25cm.) diameter, the bowl 8¼in. (21cm.) diameter, including handles, chips to finial, crack and possible chip to rim of cover beneath old overpainted floral sprig. (3). * Provenance: Included in a 1949 inventory of porcelain bequeathed to Dr. John Alistair Burkhardt by his aunt, Miss Charlotte Mary Sandford of 27, The Little Boltons, South Kensington. The inventory was prepared by White Berry & Catford, Valuers, 28 Cadogan Place, SW1 and dated 3rd March 1949. A rare pair of Sèvres frises riches wine glass coolers from the `Service de la Reine` made for the Comte and Comtesse d`Artois. blue interlaced L`s enclosing date letters `MM` for 1790, blue painter`s mark beneath for Cyprien-Julien Hirel de Choisy, one with gilder`s mark `HP` for Henri Prévost, the other with gilder`s mark `GI` for Etienne-Gabriel Girard, with gilded foliate capped scroll handles, each with a broad band of enamelled decoration comprising a central band of roses and blue flower sprigs within gilt foliate rinceaux, on a claret ground and within borders of gilt beads and green laurel with gilt berries, each side centred by a violet flower within a gilt edged claret ribbon reserved with faux `pearls`, a similar dark blue faux `pearl` band edged in gilt above the base, the rim and foot gilded, 4¼in. (10.8cm.) high, 5 7/8in. (15cm.) diameter, one with tiny chip to base, the other with a few tiny base chips. A pair of massive Sèvres style vases. mid 19th century, the baluster bodies painted with an oval panel of lovers in a landscape within a highly decorative gilded frame and to the reverse a large bouquet of flowers in a frame of lighter gilding, all reserved on a bleu celeste ground, both bearing blue Sèvres interlaced L`s mark to the base and inside the widely flared top rim, the bases moulded with an open centre section, possibly for use as lamps, 22in. (56cm.) high, one rim restored. (2). * Listed on the 1914 inventory of Redenham House, Nr. Andover, Hants., by Frederick Ellen & Son, Andover as "A pair of very handsome 22" blue and gilt Sevres Porcelain Vases, painted in oval panels, figures, birds, flowers, &c." From The second hand Department.", the table with chequered floral marquetry top and ormolu edge, over a single secretaire drawer, the fall front with conforming chequered marquetry and central floral cartouche, the interior with inset leather and three dummy drawers, raised on slender cabriole supports with ormolu sabots, 36in. (91.5cm.) x 19in. (48.5cm.), 63in. (160cm.) high. * Listed on the 1914 inventory of Redenham House, Nr. Andover, Hants., by Frederick Ellen & Son, Andover as, "A handsome 3ft. rosewood display cabinet, inlaid marquetrie, fitted with drawer, the upper part glazed enclosed by 3 doors, the whole richly mounted chased ormolu, on cabriole legs". A fine pair of early 19th century carved and ebonised Blackamoor figures. believed to depict Aborigines, each standing with one upraised hand holding a spear and the other resting on his hip, the finely carved faces with inlaid mother-of-pearl eyes, each wearing a short feather kilt and a matching piece over the shoulders together with a feathered headband and tasselled slippers, carrying a rectangular quiver of arrows suspended from a strap over one shoulder and resting on the opposite hip, standing on carved bases set on short square plinths with canted corners, painted to simulate marble, height 74in. (188cm.) excluding the spears. (2). * Listed on the 1914 inventory of Redenham House, Nr. Andover, Hants., by Frederick Ellen & Son, Andover as, "A pair of 4`9" finely carved native wood figures of Aborigines, holding four barbed spears with quivers and arrows & c. on lacquered wood stands".
