* WWI Royal Flying Corps. BE2C 2092, Zeppelin Destroyer 1916. A souvenir fragment of a flying-strut removed from the aeroplane flown by 2nd Lieut. Wulstan Tempest which shot down LZ-31 piloted by Germany`s most famous Airship Commander Leutnant Heinrich Mathy on 1st day of October 1916, the fragment fashioned into the form of a small presentation `axe` of which the head is the original aluminium aerofoil-section fixture riveted to the handle of polished hardwood ash or beech of the strut, engraved and inscribed "Piece of BE2C 2092 which brought down the Zepp at Potters Bar 1st Oct. 1916 -R.F.C." and with original component stamped markings AD with indistinct numerals, 9in (22cm) length. Full reportage of the incident was widely broadcast by National & International News press (some edited copy from The Barnet Times is provided with this souvenir) giving eyewitness and graphic accounts of this exploit for which the pilot was promoted Major and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. This very same aeroplane BE2C-2092 is the exact machine credited with being the destroyer of another German airship "kill" only in the preceding month, flown by 2nd Lieut. William Leefe-Robinson who brought down the Schutte-Lanz ship SL-11, which crashed at nearby Cuffley in Hertfordshire. For this earlier success Leefe-Robinson was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross. Both pilots were flying from Hornchurch in Essex, where their squadron No. 39 was charged with Home Defence duties, and this loss of the most senior & experienced German Airship commander led to the rapid scaling-back of Zeppelin raids on Britain.
