Born in Lanark, Scotland and educated at Kelvinside Academy, Glasgow, Freddy Rodger worked in four universities - Glasgow and Durham (now Newcastle University) as a lecturer, in Oxford on a research fellowship and in Aligarh in India as a professor where he helped to found the university`s research institute. He published four medical books as well as numerous scientific papers, several short stories and a radio play. During World War II he served in the Arakan with 42 Royal Marine Commando, being promoted in the field to Senior Medical Officer of the 3rd Commando Brigade and after the war he was appointed senior consultant eye surgeon at the new Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire. During this time he was granted special leave to work in the field for the World Health Organisation, the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, and the Scientific Exploration Society, for whom he led an international team across the equatorial forest during the Zaire river expedition. Most of the volumes in this lot carry his ownership signature and a few volumes have author inscriptions. (3 shelves)
