A walnut and oak glazed haberdashery or shop display cabinet, mid 20th century, with retailers label for Harris & Sheldon Ltd, Birmingham, with adjustable glass shelves and parquetry base on square feet, height 91cm, width 178.5cm, depth 58cm.Condition report: The glass top has a host of scratches which is to be expected of a well used piece of shop furniture, the frame is very solid with no movement, signs of general wear, glass doors move freely chips to one door, no major condition issues. A mid-century France & Son Danish sofa, with cushions upholstered in Liberty 'Bauhaus' fabric. Height 82cm, width 201cm, depth 73cm.Condition report: The couch is in a used but good condtion. There are a marks and scratches that are indictive to its use, typically on the legs and arms, but nothing of huge concern. The rubberised cushion supports (what would ordinarily be a sofa's springs), is entirely intact and the 'Bauhaus' fabric is still vibrant.

Savory was a departmental head at Ibadan University whilst Duckworth was Inspector of Education in Nigeria. They became colleagues and close personal friends. Edward Harland Duckworth (1893-1972) educated at Cheltenham College, the City and Guilds Engineering College in Finsbury, and the Royal College of Science, Imperial College, University of London. Served with the Royal Engineers during World War I, after which he returned to London University where he took an honours degree in Chemistry and became an Associate of the Royal College of Science. After temporary teaching posts at Cheltenham, Haileybury and Wellingborough, he developed the science department at Dean Close School in Cheltenham. Duckworth's name was suggested to E.R.J. Hussey, Director of Education in Nigeria; Hussey was looking for someone to take charge of the development of science in Nigeria. Duckworth was made Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930. In 1944 the post of Inspector of Education was abolished and Duckworth was officially designated "Editor of Nigeria (Magazine) and Organiser of Exhibitions" In this post he fought for the recognition of Nigerian arts and crafts, the establishment of museums and the preservation of "antiquities," and above all for a wider concept of education in the country. He retired in 1953 and went to live with his sister in Cheltenham. He died in January 1972. His papers and photographs are held in institutions such as the Bodleian Library, The Northwestern University Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, The Danford Collection of West African Art and Artefacts; Birmingham University and the National Archives etc.

A large pearlware footbath, stamped Heathcote & Co, circa 1820, of oval banded section with twin handles and transfer printed in blue with a bucolic scene of cattle watering before a country house, height 20.5cm, width 48.5cm.Condition report: There is a 12cm crack visible to the base and underside.
