The original purpose of Cook`s first voyage was to observe the transit of Venus. This was accomplished at Tahiti but six months were then spent on the coast of New Zealand, which was circumnavigated and charted for the first time, as was the east coast of Australia. It was of course Cook who named New South Wales and naturalists on the expedition who named Botany Bay. The second voyage disproved the myth of the existence of a further southern continent and made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Numerous further explorations were undertaken and discoveries made, including the New Hebrides, New Caledonia and South Georgia. Knowledge of the South Pacific was given a firm basis for the first time and the maps made then remain valid today. The final voyage was principally directed towards the search for a Northwest Passage from the Pacific, culminating in Cook`s tragic murder in the Hawaiian Islands. The second edition of the first voyage differs from the first in that it contains a Preface to the second edition, in which Hawkesworth replies to the charges made against him by Alexander Dalrymple, and in that each volume is separately paginated. The frieze of this chimneypiece is of a design that appears in one form or another fairly regularly in English chimneypieces of the period. With central relief carved tablet often decorated thematically to match the room it was designed for, standing proud from the rest of the frieze with further projecting elements, usually with subsidiary themes above the jambs. These ‘breakfront’ elements then dictated the shape of the mantel above, in effect enforcing a triple breakfront of projections. Compare lot 164, Christie‘s South Kensington, the Michael Roberts Collection, 27th September 2004 for a similar mantel and frieze arrangement. The columnar jambs upon which the outer projections rest reinforce the imposing presence of the piece, in effect bringing the fireplace frontage further off the wall and into the room. The architectural nature of the supports was also often a reflection of the wider decorative scheme of the room in which the chimneypiece was installed. See lots 714 and 738, Christie’s London, the T.Crowther & Son Collection, 12th-14th October 1992 for comparable examples. Provenance: The collection of the late John Fane
