Lot No: 72 - Ref No: 068 Ótr - The Viking By James Roberts I'm very new to this whole artist thing, I've been experimenting with different mediums for about a year now and enjoy ceramic and glass the most. Landing a job in a local secondary school as a technician helped me increase my digital editing skill and meet the friend who actually gave me the courage to submit a design. I wanted my design to reflect the place I live and love and be a fun otter pun. In Norse mythology according to the Prose Edda Ótr is a dwarf, he could change into any form, and used to spend his days in the shape of an otter, greedily eating fish. Ótr was accidentally slain by Loki, for his pelt. Hreidmar demanded a large weregild for Ótr's death, namely to fill Ótr's skin with yellow gold, and to then cover it entirely with red gold. I loved this story so designed my otter around it, I gave the otter ''Viking'' clothing, a stereotypically Hollywood Viking beard, an axe, shield and mead horn. I used the cub on the front of the otter as the otter skin that Loki had filled with gold. I'm so happy and humbled to have been given this opportunity to help raise funds for such a good project I often walk around Dartmoor and hope that the otter trails will help many others do so sustainably.
