Acquired from heirs.Conservation: intact.Measurements: 20 cm. long.Bronze axe belonging to the Atlantic Final Bronze Age culture. This is a time phase or group of chronocultures characterised by metal deposits. In the Iberian Peninsula it dates from 1250 BC to 850 BC and extends from the Algarve and Huelva to the Bay of Biscay and links up with the continental Atlantic Late Bronze Age. It is divided into three stages: Atlantic Final Bronze Age I (1250-1100 BC), II (1100-940) and III (940-850). This historical process is parallel to the cultures of the first urn fields, Cogotas I, the southwestern stelae and the Phoenician colonisation. Its end coincides with the beginnings of Tartessos.

Nsapo o Songye - Democratic Republic of Congo Kilonda Ceremonial axe.Wood, copper iron.Signs of use. . Cm 22,00 x 39,00 x 3,50. About a copper axe like this, an anonymous author wrote in an 1896 magazine that it was not an instrument of war or work, but of insignia that the local leaders put in the hands of their emissaries and thus testified to the sometimes very extensive powers, data to the same.This splendid example of axe Kilonda completely covered in red copper, with the exception of a small part in iron that in all probability served as a "flag" ie to represent a precise owner or king, is characterized by different geometric decorations, by a hole and a stylized face with masterful synthesis and expressiveness, forged and engraved in copper on both sides of the blade.An almost identical face is also represented on the two-limbed blade of the Kilonda ex coll. Josef Mueller, published on p. 247 of the book De fer et de fierté, Armes Blanches d'Afrique noir du musée Babier-Mueller, written by Jan Elsen for 5 Continents Editions, 2003.

Above small lid. Iron haft, at the base remains of the missing wooden shaft. Scarce. height 101 (176) cm.

dating: late 18th Century provenance: France, Single-and false-edged blade, with fuller at the center and then flat. Engraved with a noble coat of arms with the inscription 'CANDIDE' at the first part, two rampant lions with an axe under the crown on the other side, both sides with floral decorations. Silver, 'S'-shaped quillon decorated with rocaille in bas-relief. Ebony hilt with pommel sculpted as a lion's head, long cap and bronze button. Leather scabbard (abrasions) with silver mounts, the cap worked en suite with the quillon. length 39.5 cm.

dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Papal States, Large, convex-edged, iron head, with a long beak curved downwards. The shaft of elliptical section, provided with brass caps at the two ends. The upper side also featuring two iron spring lugs. See an extremely similar axe in 'L'Esercito Pontificio, da Castelfidardo a Porta Pia 1860 - 1870' by Brandani / Crociani / Firoentino (ed. Intergest 1976, Milano): a drawing of a sapper in parade dress uniform of year 1865 carrying the same axe model (page 10). On page 38 a colored drawing showing a sapper of the Line Infantry Regiment, again in parade dress uniform, leaning on his axe, clearly visible this time, identical to ours. Finally near the drawing a photograph of 'tools and epaulets for a sapper' where the same type of axe can clearly be seen. Interesting. height 105 cm.

dating: circa 1700 provenance: Italy, Iron cusp, slightly ribbed at the center, engraved with floral motifs at the base, provided with a small axe and curved rear fluke, both finely engraved and with bird's head. Ferrule shaped as a truncated cone. On wooden shaft with modern tassel. length 219 cm.

dating: circa 1600 provenance: Italy, Cusp of lozenge section; long-edged axe with the upper tip strengthened, pierced at the center and provided with two lugs. Pierced, oblique rear fluke with strengthened tip. Long, flat straps on octagonal, wooden shaft. height 123.5 cm.
