Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old chips, splits and losses. Handles and escutcheons are old replacements. Some small plugged holes to drawer fronts from previous fixtures. Locks are 18th century but are replacements. No keys present, all locks are open. Various old veneer and moulding repairs. A George II mahogany serpentine fronted, combined gentleman's desk and dressing table, circa 1755, the hinged top opening to a divided interior centred by a ratchet adjustable writing slope, the writing slope revolving to become a mirror, above a depth adjustable kneehole, the back stamped 'AF', 80cm high, 94cm wide, 61cm deep Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, HerefordshireCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Some fading. The small axe head handles to the writing slope/mirror have been re-attached at some point. There are some losses and filler to the surrounding areas. Section of veneer lacking to one side edge when the top is lifted. Some grooves/dents to the underside of the top from where handles below have indented when opening and closing the top. Lock plate to door of kneehole and hinges to top are old replacements, all other metalware appears original. Small fillets of replacement timber adjacent to hinges. Some wear to gilding. Keys present and operate all locks. Some old ink stains to interior. Some larger splits to sides with filler used in places to help disguise. Split running along the edge between one side and back. One handle detached and with loop lacking. The capitals at the tops of the reeded pilasters either side of the kneeholes are detached but present. China, 11 bronze spade shaped charms or amulets, Qing dynasty, 31-61mm, F to VF, together with a Great axe shaped charm, 101mm, good FCONDITION: Provenance - Alfred Theodore Arber-Cooke (c.1905-1993); thence by family descent. Arber-Cooke was an antiquarian and avid collector of Asian works of art, coins and antiquities principally collecting from the 1930s to the 1970s. He amassed a good reference library on Chinese & Asian coins and wrote on several occasions (1969-70) to to the academic F.A. Turk regarding the study of coin amulets and other non-currency coinages of China. A number of the Asian numismatic reference books will be offered in our 29th March sale.Arber-Cooke initially lived in Wimbledon, Greater London and was involved with the Surrey Archaeological Society. He wrote the book 'Old Wimbledon', with a foreword the MP Sir Arthur Fell, published in 1927. He later moved to Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, Wales, again involved with local archaeology and wrote the History of Llandovery, published in 1975.

(Honorary Axe for Boarding the Enemy) Superb replacement model, 104x61 mm, cast in Silver and engraved by hand "Le 1er Consul/au Cen Philippe Ferey/Matelot Timonier/Combat du 27 THer an 9/DEVt Boulogne" and subsequently gilt. The recipient was a navy quartermaster (matelot timonier) on the gunship Etna and received this award on 11 Brumaire of year X for having distinguished himself in the combat of Boulogne fl eet on 27 Thermidor year IX. It is during that naval battle that he had his right hand blown away by a cannonball. Extremely rare published reward! Provenance collection "General Stiot". I- RR!

MARK FIRTH (b.1952) 'Relic', aluminium and stainless steel, approximately 214cm wide x 335cm high Mark Firth was commissioned by the Directors of Eagle Star to produce this sculpture commemorating the company's move to their offices at 60, St Mary Axe in 1988, the tablet makes references to eagles and Eagle Star with the drilled holes representing the stars in the constellation 'Aquila' (The Eagle) and with further such references including plans of the new offices, picture of a mountain range in reference to Edward Mountain who founded the company in 1904. A Pair of Derby Porcelain Figures of Summer and Winter, circa 1765, from a set of The Seasons, Summer as a maiden holding a posy, a cherub with a basket of flowers on his head at her side, Winter as a bearded figure in a fur cloak, a cherub chopping wood at his side, on scroll moulded bases, 22cm high. Summer with firing cracks to base. Winter with shaft of axe missing. Both with typical minor losses and wear.
A pair of early 19th century English porcelain figures of garden labourers, height 13cm, and a further figure of a woodcutter, height 11cm.Additional InformationFigure with barrel over shoulder has got extensive restoration throughout, mostly to the head, hat, the barrel itself, the tunic, legs, feet and bocage. She is also completely restored throughout. The woodcutter similarly restored, his axe, head, the smock, the basket, body and base.
A fine and rare late 16c. probably ceremonial European war or battle axe beautifully decorated overall with birds in a foliate surround, these axes were slender in design in order to be light enough to be wielded on foot or on horseback. The probably original leather grip held in place with twisted wire thread, the pointed iron finial with hole to fit the leather wrist band. This axe would have been for the use of a high ranking soldier and the condition of the leather grip suggests it has seen some action, museum quality G++
A pair of stylish Jugendstil copper candlesticks by Carl Deffner of Esslingen in the Art Nouveau style with openwork and pierced design, with the crossed war axe and CED mark impressed to base, height 16.5cm.Condition report: As is often the case with this model they have a number of dents and appear quite worn, although this may be partly due to residues of metal polish and general grubbiness.
