9th-11th century AD. An iron broad axe with wide flared blade, reinforced curved cutting edge, narrow triangular socket with lateral spurs above and below; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. River Thames find in Williams, G., Pentz, P. & Wemhoff, M. Vikings Life and Legend, London, 2014, item 58. 1.2 kg total, 31cm including stand (12 1/4"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. Very fine condition, professionally cleaned and conserved. Rare.
A 19th Century Scottish Sampler by Helen Whitehead, Bridge of Earn, 1829 with central proverb to the top, 'Like crowded forest trees we stand, and some are markd to fall, the axe will smite at Gods command, and soon will smite us all', with decorative flowering trees, birds, central thistle with crown, peacocks, dogs, initials, within a floral border, in a maple frame, 52cm by 52cm. Slight discolouring to the backing cloth, some threads worn, others faded and showing wear. Small stain just under the verse. Scuffing and wear to the frame.

Measures 38.5 Inches - 97 cm In length.
