Tennis Racket Fabrication Tools - Marking Out Tools - a selection of wooden axe shaped tools with sharp teeth used to position holes in the frame prior to drilling, in slightly varying sizes and with holes presumably for a pivoting tool, an interesting selection of tools. ELEVEN CHINESE PALE CELADON JADE PLAQUES QING DYNASTY Comprising: an oval plaque with Li Bai and an attendant, with calligraphy to the reverse, others as an axe head, a lock, a bi disc, a belt hook, a cicada, a dragon, a butterfly, a cross-section of a lotus stem, another of two coins and one of two confronting archaistic dragons, 8cm. (11) Provenance: from the collection of Surgeon Lieutenant George Giri, b.1923, purchased in Hong Kong 1962-65.
1st-2nd century AD. A mixed group of nineteen bronze brooches and brooch fragments comprising of: an openwork triangular brooch with balustered terminals, a flat axe-shaped brooch with ribbed catchplate, three finely decorated bow-sections, two small bow brooches formed from a single rod with coiled finials and pins, a Langton Down type with flat ribbed bow, three T-section brooches with flat rectangular-section head-plate, five bow-sections with catch-plates, a large slender brooch with two raised knobs to the centre and triangular-section catchplate, one with cross-section lower plate and rectangular head-plate, a trumpet brooch with knob finial and round-section pin. 147 grams total, 25-66mm (1 - 2 1/2"). The Chris Rudd collection, Norfolk, UK; formed since the 1970s; collection numbers US22-25,28,30,32,38-44 formerly in the Fabulous Fibulas collection, Southern UK; formed in the 1980s and 1990s. Chris Rudd has collected ancient coins and antiquities since the 1940s. As an amateur archaeologist he found many himself at Badbury Rings, Dorset, 1952-53. He also dug at Hod Hill with Professor Sir Ian Richmond and at Wroxeter with Dame Kathleen Kenyon and Dr Graham Webster. Today he is best known as a Celtic coin dealer. His catalogues have been described as ‘an important research source’ by Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe and ‘treasure houses of delight’ by Dr Anne Ross. Coins and artefacts associated with Chris Rudd – as a collector, dealer and valuer – can be seen in The British Museum and other museums. This collection was formed since the 1970s. 5th-8th century AD. An iron axehead, or francisca, for throwing with square rear edge, scooped upper face and curved edge; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Nice, A. Revue Archéologique de Picardie: La Nécropole Mérovingienne de Goudelancourt-lès-Pierrepont (Aisne), Senlis, 2008, item S.311. 1.4 kg total, axe 15cm (6"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. Very fine condition. Very rare.
24th-21st century BC. A large black jasper cylinder seal with bearded sun-god Šamaš wearing a flounced robe and a single-horned head-dress, with hair bun at the neck, raising the left hand with his saw, is seated facing right on a throne with a cross-shaped side brace; before the god a worshipper wearing a fringed robe led by the hand(?) by a goddess wearing a striped robe; the representation of the upper body of the goddess and the space immediately behind her is absent; between Šamaš and goddess a scorpion, between the goddess and worshipper an axe. For Akkadian times the rule is that the sun-god is generally shown facing right, cf. Collon, D. Cylinder Seals II. Akkadian-, Post Akkadian - Ur III-Periods, London, 1982, p.104. 30 grams, 34mm (1 1/2"). Property of a European gentleman living in London; previously from an American collection formed in the 1950s. Very fine condition.
2nd millennium BC. A bronze flat axe with square butt, tapering sides, eccentrically curved blade. Cf. Schmidt, P.K. & Burgess, C.B. The Axes of Scotland and Northern England, Prähistorische Bronzefunde, Ab. IX, vol. 7, Munich, 1981, item 237 (Type Migdale"). 66 grams, 91mm (3 3/4"). 2nd millennium BC. A cast bronze palstave axe with flared blade and lateral flanges, square butt Cf. Schmidt, P.K. & Burgess, C.B. 10th-12th century AD. A bronze appliqué modelled in the half-round, rider on advancing horse with axe in one hand and reins in the other. See Sedov, B.B. 11th-12th century AD. A miniature bronze axe-head pendant of Scandinavian type (also widespread in the historical Rus region), with a long blade and spurs to the inner edges; the thick neck pierced for suspension; punched motifs and panels of cross hatching. Cf. Korshyn, V.E. Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rusi X-XIV Vekov, volume I, Moscow, 2013, item D.2.02-03. 8.91 grams, 52mm (2"). From a North West London collection; previously acquired in the 1980s. 81 BC. Rome mint. Obv: HISPAN behind veiled bust of Hispania right. Rev: A POST A F S ALBIN legend with AL in monogram with togate figure standing left extending right hand towards legionary eagle before, fasces with axe behind. Craw 372/2; Syd 746; BMC 3238; RSC Postumia 8; Sear 297. 3.95 grams. Very fine.
