Cf. for similar examples Beutler, F. et al., Der Adler Roms. The cult of Jupiter Dolichenus was a variant of worship of Zeus from Asia Minor whose mystery cult was widespread in the Roman Empire from the early 2nd to mid-3rd centuries A.D., especially in the military. The god is usually represented mounting a bull, with the double axe (labrys or bipennis) in his right raised hand, and dressed in the military attire of a Roman general. From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. Los 1481

2nd-1st millennium B.C.. With central shaft hole and blade set at right angle. Cf. Christie's, The Axel Guttmann Collection of Ancient Arms and Armour, part 2, London, 2004, item 34, p.32. 1.22 kg, 24.5 cm (9 5/8 in.). The adze-axe was a fundamental axe of many Bronze Age cultures of the world. Its form was one that lends itself to dual purposes - for war and peace. As a tool, it was used to shape wood in fabricating a variety of objects or even wooden beams for construction. As a weapon, its heavy mass and compact form make it a very deadly striking and chopping weapon, even able to defeat light armour. From a 1990s German collection. Ex London, UK, gallery.

Rhineland, circa 1480-1500 A.D.. The gilt polychrome carving showing Saint Simeon holding the infant Christ in his arms before his circumcision, Saint Simeon wearing a priestly mitre, holding the infant above an altar covered by an embroidered brocade; Virgin Mary to his left gazing at the infant tenderly, veiled and wearing a long robe with gilt decoration; to her left Saint Joseph dressed in a long robe and gilt cloak, holding a carpenter's axe in his left hand; praying Saint Anna to the right of Saint Simeon, wearing a simple dress and veil; to her right Saint Joachim, wearing a yellow cap and gilt cloak; the columns of the Temple of Jerusalem on the background; on a wooden stand. Cf. relief of the Circumcision of Christ in Smith College of Art Museum, accession no.SC 1955.68, for a similar scene in stone. 10.15 kg, 86.5 cm wide (34 in.). The relief shows the parents and relatives of infant Jesus following the Jewish tradition of circumcising young boys eight days after their birth. Ca. AD 800 - 1100A Viking iron bearded axe head with a heavy blade and a socket. Contrary to popular belief, the most commonly used weapon in antiquity was not the sword but the battle-axe. In fact, this weapon had enormous advantages over the more emblazoned sword.Firstly, the axe was easier to make, much more resistant during clashes and did not risk to breaking on the first impact. Moreover, the blows that were given with this weapon were extremely powerful, and this was due to the weight of the axe itself in comparison with the sword. Last but not least, the axe could also be used to chop and split wood, which was an extremely important and everyday activity in the ancient world.Size: 170mm x 150mm; Weight: 960gProvenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old Canadian collection of F.
