A FINE AND RARE GERMAN HALBERD FOR THE GUARD OF JOHAN GEORG, ELECTOR AND MARGRAVE OF BRANDENBURG (1525, 1571-98), DATED 1570 with tapering terminal spike of hollow-diamond section, forward-leaning curved axe-blade, down-curved rear fluke, tapering socket and a pair of long straps (the lower portions replaced in their early working life), the head etched over almost its entire surface with flowers and scrolling leafy tendrils on a stippled ground, the terminal spike with the crowned abbreviated inscription 'A.N.G.W.' (Alles nach Gottes Willen) in gilt letters, the axe-head with the repeated gilt inscription, and the rear fluke with the date in gilt numbers on each face (lightly refreshed), on a wooden haft 55 cm; 21 5/8 in head Johan Georg became Elector and Margrave on 3 January 1571 (Old Style 1570) following the death of Joachim II Hector. Joachim's death left a heavy burden of debt which was addressed by his successor's financial reforms and wise government. He was popular with nobles and some towns. He was a Lutheran though he did not allow his religion to involve his state in military adventures in defence of this cause. Another halberd from this group is preserved in then Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no. 14.25.253). AN ITALIAN HALBERD, LAST QUARTER OF THE 16TH CENTURY with long terminal spike of diamond section, forward leaning curved axe-blade pierced with a pair of cross-shaped apertures, formed with a pierced rounded lug behind the upper and lower tips, the former with a reinforced point, pierced reinforced rear fluke, and a pair of long straps, on a later wooden haft 110.5 cm; 43 in head

A RARE GERMAN ETCHED HALBERD, DATED 1566 with medially-ridged leaf-shaped terminal blade etched on the respective faces with the figure of St George on one side and an inscription including the date and the initials 'P W' on the other, all against a stippled ground surrounded by scrolling leafy tendrils, small axe-blade pierced with five holes, rear fluke formed with an additional lug above, the latter stamped with a clover leaf mark on one side, etched throughout with further tendrils inhabited by exotic birds (the etching worn), and faceted socket decorated en suite, on an early fabric-covered wooden haft, fitted with two pairs of straps on the upper portion and the lower encased with a trellis pattern of leather studded with large domed brass nails 46.2 cm; 18¼ in head Provenance Schloss Grafenegg, Austria, sold Galerie Fischer, Zurich 1934, lot 47. The inscription reads: "Gott Mein Trost, Aber Jesus Christus Hat Mich von Allen Suenden Erloest, Anno Domini 1566" A halberd of similar form struck with the same maker's mark and decorated with the Crucifixion on one side and a standard bearer on the other is preserved in the Royal Armouries, Leeds. See Müller and Kölling 1990, no. 25. The Berlin example is etched with a similar inscription with the additional letters 'G.V.B.C.', reflecting his promotion to Elector that year. The Diocese of Merseburg was secularized in 1562 and its various properties and lands passed into the ownership of the Dukes of Saxony.

They had three sets of dress, for war, daily use and ceremony. The latter was decorated with blue vertical bands alternating with crimson silk velvet embroidered in white silk thread with a chain design. An example of this uniform is preserved in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris, inv. no. 3641 DEP.

Marvel Comics: The original artwork for the cover of The Mighty Thor, issue 159, December 1968, by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta, ink and white paint, 44 x 29 cm (including margin) See back cover colour illustration Condition report Report by RB The backing appears to be one piece of paper, which is folded just above the two pierced holes to the bottom, there are a few pin holes, pencil and ink inscriptions to the borders. Parts have been pasted (with sellotape). Some staining, darkened areas. There are a few creases, fold marks, a small section of loss to the bottom right hand section, all of which should be easy to see from the photographs, although if you would like any detailed shots of any particular corner sections, or designs, please just ask. Clearly this is a paste up for the cover with parts stuck over the top, the way it was done for printing changed with computers. Provenance: this has hung in the vendor's bedroom from the early 1970s. Her father was a creative/advertising designer who worked on campaigns such as Old Spice and Castrol engine oil campaigns, and it is assumed he acquired it from a work colleague, friend or associate at this time. Report by GH The entire bottom two thirds of the image including Thor, the giant's head and right hand wielding the axe and the rocks etc below are pasted on top of the initial board. The giant's left forearm and hand is a separate piece of card stuck on separately, and the intervening space is filled in with detail i.e. the area just above the elbow. The Thor title, and the Marvel comics group section on the left with the price and the date etc are also separate pieces of card which have been stuck down on to the original board. Report by GH All of the image is original artwork, and the image of Thor and the monster is set down on to the board underneath. Similarly the title and the Marvel comics group rectangle are pasted down in the same way. This is done so the images could be arranged and moved around when forming the mock up of the cover. The mock up is not pasted on to the mount behind and is entirely loose and separate. They are being held together by the frame and the glass.

A 6-bolt Admiralty pattern diving helmet by Siebe Gorman & Co,London:, oval side windows with guards, circular front window, spitcock, side outlet , rear inlet and telephone, the corselet with maker's plate as per title, 46cm high. * Notes-This is an example of a helmet that was scrapped by the Admiralty. A pick axe was put through the top and other parts damaged or destroyed before discarding. It has been rebuilt - but not very well. Though the front view appears normal, closer inspection shows the copper of the corselet is almost separated from the brass surround. The outlet valve is untidy and the hole alongside would have had a lanyard hook attached. However the holes in the top and the inside air vents have been well repaired. The Admiralty markings AP 7985, with their emblem the broad arrow and AB are stamped above the front window. The side window surrounds are also stamped 378 & 916 but have been replaced with odd nuts and bolts which can be seen. The comms inside have been poorly replaced. * see page 44-45, vol 1, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

Cylindrical, wooden haft covered by a long, metallic ring nut decorated with spirals on three-third of the length, then featuring a segment at the center, with twisted, black leather covering, the grip with white, metallic ring nut decorated en suite.
