**A NORTH-WEST EUROPEAN WAR AXE, 11TH CENTURY of flat wedge-shaped section formed with a reinforced curved leading edge and swept-upwards, rectangular socket formed with a pointed terminal top and bottom on each face and flattened rear face, on a later wooden haft 18 cm; 7 1/8 in head An axe of similar form from Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire dating to circa 1050-1100 is preserved in the Burgh Museum, Dumfries, Scotland. A rare Indian Elephant goad/axe late 18th century, axe head inlaid with remnants of silver and gilt decoration, attached by a block to the shaft and spike, a brass crafted elephant affixed to the top of the mounting block, the block also inlaid with the remnants of gilt decoration, pole form shaft unscrews to reveal a spike form goad, 23in.(58.5cm.) long.
