Parashurama (Rama with the axe) was the sixth avatar of Vishnu, incarnated as a Brahmin with the purpose of destroying the entire race of kshatriyas or warriors, who were abusing their power and tyrannising people. His father Jamadagni kept a miraculous cow, Surabhi, which was coveted by the 1000-armed demon king Arjuna Kartavirya. When Parashurama was away from his fathers house, the king made off with the cow. The enraged Parashurama followed them and cut off the kings thousand arms with his axe, before returning the cow (here seen fleeing on the horizon) to his father. Other such challenges followed and Parashurama ended up extirpating the entire class of warriors. For similar series of the avatars of Vishnu, which were especially popular in Chamba, see Goswamy and Fischer 1992, pp. 174-85.Literature:Goswamy, B.N., and Fischer, E., 'Pahari Masters: Court Painters of Northern India', Museum Rietberg, Zurich, 1992, Artibus Asiae Supplementum 38, reprint Niyogi Books, Delhi, 2009

STÈLE DE GANESHA DANSANT EN GRÈS ROUGEINDE DU NORD, VERS XIE SIECLE75 cm (29 1/2 in.) highFootnotes:A RED SANDSTONE STELE OF DANCING GANESHANORTH INDIA, CIRCA 11TH CENTURY印度北部 約十一世紀 紅砂岩象神石碑Provenance: With Claude de Marteau, New York, by 1967The mischievous elephant-headed god Ganesha can clear (or create) obstacles, and is therefore propitiated before the start of almost any undertaking. His body moves in kinetic ecstasy, shifting from one foot to the other in a limber sway. Full-bodied hips swing, as he rejoices gleefully holding a bowl of sweets, while two dancers flanking his heels mirror Ganesha's rhythmic portrayal. He wears a garland crown and carries a cobra as a trophy in his upper pair of arms. As the remover of obstacles, he wields the battle-axe and hooked goad as weapons to ward off adversities. Tales of the origins and appearance of Ganesha vary, but most describe him as having been created a boy by his mother Parvati from the residue of her bathwater. Once manifest, she placed him as sentry to her bath chamber. Shortly thereafter, Parvati's husband Shiva appeared, demanding entry. When Ganesha refused the stranger's request, Shiva removed his head. Parvati insisted Shiva restore Ganesha's head immediately. The first available head was that of an elephant, which was expediently placed atop the young man's body, thus forming the unique appearance of this beloved deity. Compare with an example in the Rubin Museum of Art (C2004.14.4) where Ganesha's middle right hand is drawn back to his chest. Also compare with a related multi-armed figure of Ganesha in the James W. and Marilynn Alsdorf Collection, Pal, A Collecting Odyssey, 1997, p. 60 and 287, cat. no. 70.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: WW Lot is located in the Bonhams Warehouse and will only be available for collection from this location. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ca. 1000-1100 AD. The broad blade flaring to the curved cutting edge, with an eared socket with a D-shaped aperture. Commonly referred to as the Danish axe. Axes were commonly used within the Viking communities, almost everything was formed of wood making it unsurprising that many axes existed for constructing ships, houses, carts, as well as other objects. The axe was also one of the choice weapons of the battlefield due to its lightweight. For a similar style see Bonhams, 5th October 2011, lot 304. Size: L:164mm / W:138mm; 690g Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s on the UK / International art markets.

Los 267

Ca. 8000-6000 BC. A rare artifact of the European Mesolithic era - a horn axe. This stunning piece showcases a flared butt and tapering profile. It is adorned with a single, drilled hole that allowed for attachment to a handle, making it a versatile tool for the early inhabitants of Europe. During the Mesolithic era, these horn axes were vital tools for hunting, woodworking, and other daily tasks. They were used for chopping, splitting, and shaping wood, as well as for skinning and butchering game. The flared butt of the horn axe provided a secure grip for the user, while the tapering profile allowed for precise cuts and maneuvers. The hole in the axe head allowed for the attachment of a handle, which provided additional leverage and control.Size: L:185mm / W:100mm ; 240gProvenance: Property of a European collector, ex. Marcus Prill, 2007; formerly in private German collection.

Los 517

Ca. 1200-900 BC. A cast bronze double axe head characterized by a short cylindrical shaft hole, a flattened top, and a vertical blade with a curved cutting edge. At the back, a smaller horizontal adze blade completes this beautiful design. An adze is designed for tasks that require more precision and finesse, such as carving or shaping wood, and is suitable for a wide range of tasks. In Bronze Age, axes like this one were used not only as tools but also as weapons. The region's abundant resources of copper and tin made it a prime location for the production of bronze weapons, and these axes would have been in high demand for hunting, warfare, and clearing land for agriculture.Size: L:70mm / W:245mm ; 1.5kgProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.

Los 514

Ca. 2000-700 BC. A bronze axe head with a short, curved blade, tapering cheek, and a wedge-shaped adze to the rear. The shaft long and cylindrical. An axe such as this one would have been an important symbol of rank, and have served a purpose in warfare, but also in religious contexts as axes were common votive offerings in shrines. Size: L:110mm / W:270mm ; 2.11kg Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.

Los 565

Western Asiatic/Aegan, ca. 1200-700 BC. A collection of four bronze weapons, including three spearheads and a flat axe. The three spearheads are with blades boasting a midrib and tapering to a sharp point, each with a tang for easy insertion into a wooden shaft. The design of these spearheads was carefully crafted for maximum efficiency, allowing warriors to pierce through armor and flesh with ease. The flat axe is equally impressive. Its flat design, rounded butt, and curved and flared cutting edge to the opposite end, allow for quick and efficient cutting and chopping. The axe represents the ingenuity and adaptability of ancient peoples, who harnessed the power of bronze to create objects of practical use in daily life.Size: L:110-170mm / W:20-35mm ; 180gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.

Los 535

Ca. 1200-1000 BC. A bronze axe head with a vertical round-section shaft and a curved blade with flaring ends. The exterior side of the shaft is adorned with intricate diagonal etchings. Axes played a crucial role in the lives of the people of the Bronze Age, serving as a tool for agriculture, woodworking, and as a weapon in times of conflict. The curved blade with flaring ends was specifically designed for efficient chopping and cutting, demonstrating the ingenuity and practicality of the Bronze Age society.Size: L:100mm / W:150mm ; 1.34kgProvenance: From the private collection of Mr. R. Unger; previously with a London gallery; acquired in the 1980s on the UK art market.

Los 44

Ca. 900-1100 AD. An iron bearded axe head with an elongated, curved blade and tapering cheek. The bearded axe, or Skeggøx (from Old Norse Skegg, "beard", and øx, "axe") was common from the 6th century AD onwards in Scandinavia but made most famous by the Vikings, who used these axes in battles to terrible effect. In bearded axes, the main part of the axe blade extends below the butt of the axe, creating a large cutting blade and allowing a fighter to hook onto the shields or weapons of their opponents. For more information on Viking axes, see Hubbard, B. (2016) The Viking Warrior. Amber Books Ltd, London, 139-141. This item comes with a custom-made display stand. Size: L:145mm / W:195mm ; 1.28kg Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s

A woven silk fragment depicting Krishna Assam, mid 16th Centuryof rectangular form, woven in polychrome silks with bands containing depictions of Krishna, Garuda and avatars of Vishnu, some bands with inscriptions in Bengali-Assamese script 94 x 80.5 cm.Footnotes:This silk textile from Assam is an example of a Vrindavani Vastra, a textile woven with narratives from the lives of Vishnu and his avatars. There are various examples of such textiles in museums including the V&A and the British Museum. It has been suggested that these textiles were Vaishnavite ritual objects, produced under the instruction of the Assamese saint-scholar Sankardev (1449-1569), and used to cover the Bhagavata Purana placed on the altars in temples of Vishnu (Francesca Galloway, Treasures from India, London 2006, p. 146, nos. 57-59).A larger example with a very similar and more intact sequence of images can be found in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (AC1995.94.1).The LACMA example can be used as a comparative for some of the imagery of the present Vastra which is damaged or otherwise undecipherable. From top to bottom, the repeating panels of this fragment display:Krishna in a tree surrounded by figures on the ground, referencing the episode where Krishna steals the gopis' clothes as they bathe; Krishna crouching on the head of a snake demon, possibly Aghasura; two figures which could possibly be the warrior avatar Parashurama holding an axe and either Vishnu's boar avatar Varaha or the lion avatar Narasimha; Garuda the bird-headed man mount of Vishnu accompanied by a swan or goose; Krishna lifting Mount Govardhana to shelter a cow; and Vishnu's fish and tortoise avatars Matsya and Kurma. The motifs then continue to repeat in the same sequence. There are undeciphered inscriptions in Bengali-Assamese script woven through the textile. In most Vrindavani Vastras, these inscriptions would usually be either identifying names for the characters or longer Assamese passages from the devotional songs (Borgit) of Sankardev (Saurav Sengupta, Sankaradeva's Vrindavani Vastra: A Gift to Humanity, Damdama College, Guwahati 2020, p.2).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
