An iron axehead with long sturdy neck and curved cutting edge; round socket with triangular lateral flanges and long rectangular back panel to the rear; mounted on a custom-made display stand. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, pl.14(10) for type. 2.4 kg total, axe: 23.5cm (9 1/4"). From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s. Very fine condition, professionally cleaned and conserved.
