A Japanese ivory okimono figure group, Meiji period (1868-1912) The well carved and stained group, modelled as a father and son, the small boy holds a peony stem, the man a noh mask, an axe at his feet, 7cm high, unsigned. A suite of Indo-Persian armour, including a decorated helmet (Kulah-Khud) and shield (Dhal), a chainmail tunic of typical form and construction, with applied felt collar, and an axe. The helmet with hemispherical skull, fitted at its top with a tapering central spike, at its front with a rectangular staple with a plume-holder on either side, all decorated with etched and chiseled designs, the skull with shaped panels including exotic birds and scrolls, mail neck-defence of butted links highlighted with brass (losses); the shield of low convex form, decorated en suite with the kulah khud, the greater part of its outer surface with etched designs of scrolling foliage inhabited by mounted figures in pursuit of game with hawks, swords and clubs, calligraphic border, brass rim, and fitted with four bosses.

A mixed groups comprising: a finger ring with scaphoid bezel; a finger ring with domed lug to the bezel; an axe pendant; a hammer pendant with zoomorphic handle; a dress pin with annular head; a bow brooch with radiate head; a bow brooch with integral pin; a ribbed strap end; a ribbed hoop with club finial. 40 grams total, 2-14.5cm (3/4 - 5 3/4). Property of an Essex gentleman; formerly in a private collection, acquired by descent 1970s. Cf. An enamel, gold, silver gilt and amethyst desk seal, unmarked, probably Austrian, circa 1900, inventory no. 505675, the tapering cylindrical handle with white guilloche enamel between rose gold laurel borders and topped by a facet-cut amethyst, a silver gilt collar and cushion, the circular cornelian matrix engraved with a royal crown above an axe, 6cm (2 1/4in) high Provenance: Anonymous vendor, Sotheby's Billingshurst, 13th August 1997, lot 2195. The crown and axe possibly of Norwegian origin.
