A Japanese polished brass naming axe for the MT 'Diana Prosperity':, inscribed to both sides of the axe head with launch date and yard details, mounted on a plain handle with coloured ribbons, in a presentation box, the axe 31cm long.*Notes- The 'Diana Prosperity' was ordered in 1976 but due to the decline in the oil market the purchasers tried to argue that the contract was void as the ship had not been built at Osaka yard but instead at Oshima yard. The case went to the House of Lords and is now known as a landmark case in English contract law as Lord Wilberforce stated that the yard and ship number had no significance, rather that it was the goods that were significant.

Ca. 800 to 500 BC. Northern Europe, Celtic culture, Late Bronze Age socketed ae head with loop. An excellently-preserved example of a cast bronze axe head. The head is socketed, with an ovoid opening for a handle. The blade has two long, cast, shallow grooves on each side. There is a slight collar around the socket, and two fastening loop on either side of the blade that would have helped affix the axe head to its wooden handle. The hollow socket was a technological innovation, allowing economical use of bronze while still making a strong weapon. Ca.800 AD. A large, heavy, iron axe head, probably from a francisca, a specific type of throwing axe, with (as here) a distinctive arch-shaped head that flattens into a two-pointed blade; the head forms an obtuse angle with the socket, which is wide, designed to fit a relatively short, tapered shaft. The blade has stampes that may have indicated ownership or the workshop where it was made. They were thrown into a melee, and even if the blade did not strike flesh, the heavy weight of the iron would splinter shields or deal serious head injuries and cause chaos. These types of weapons were famously described by the Byzantine historian Procopius to describe the fighting style of the Franks, but we know that they were used throughout the Germanic medieval world.Good Condition; fine example; L:225mm/H:120mm( 8.85in, 4.72in) (with stand); 1750gr; Provenance: Important London collection of Ancient art; formed in 1970s then passed by descent.
