A halberd of the "Cent Suisses" of Louis XIV dating: first quarter of the 18th Centuryprovenance: FranceIron head with straight, double-edged blade with central raiser, provided with knotted neck; small, hollow axe with big spikes, the beak strongly curved toward the bottom, with big spikes; tapering, knotted socket. The halberd features a relieved effigy of sun with anthropomorphic face surrounded by rays, on a side the pierced lily of France, on the other the monogram "L" (for Louis XIV). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Zeus Aëtophoros enthroned left, drapery about legs and waist, holding sceptre and eagle; double headed axe before, ?????????? to right. Caracalla Æ33 of Amisus, Pontus. Year 241 = AD 209/10. ????????C C???C?, laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield; countermark: capricorn / ???C? ????????, Amazon standing left gathering fruit, at foot of tree Amazonian shield and bipennis; in exergue, ETCMA. A. Malloy, The Coinage of Amisus, New York 1970, 161; for countermark: Howgego 299. 18.65g, 33mm, 7h. Very Fine. Extremely Rare. The figure in this image can be identified as an Amazon on account of the axe and the shape of the shield set against the tree, which conforms to Roman ideals of Amazonian apparel. A close parallel may be found on a relief adorning a marble sarcophagus in the Capitoline museum (inv. scu 726), in which an Amazon battles Greeks armed with such a shield and double-bladed axe. Here we see this Amazon in a moment of rest, gathering fruit from a laden tree she has come upon. According to Apollonios of Rhodes' in Argonautica, the mythical Amazons lived just to the east of Amisos in three towns near Themiscrya near the mouth of the Thermodon (modern Terme) river.

Axe: An Indian 'TABARZIN' (saddle axe) typical of those used by armoured Indian cavalry in the 18th & 19th century. All steel construction. Overall length 25". Pierced tiger decoration and spike finial to shaft. Nicely patinated. Possibly a tourist piece but appears to have some age to it. Viewing recommended, sold as seen.
Axe: An Indian all steel 'TABARZIN' (saddle axe) typical of those used by armoured Indian Cavalry in the 18th & 19th centuries. Heavy iron construction overall. Length approx 22". Simple Indian warrior decoration. Vertical shaft spoke and spike to rear of axe blade. The whole with light pitting and age patination giving every appearance of some age. This is a decorative item of some age. Viewing recommended. Sold as seen.
A Zulu style axe, 52 cm Condition report Report by MW Shaft length 51.5 cm No worm damage but there are some cracks, marks, scratches, bruising etc. commensurate with age. The steel leaf shaped axe head is approximately 12 x 16 cm, not including the attachment to the wooden shaft. The axe head is patinated and has a small area missing (like a rust bubble, see photograph) on one side of the axe head. See other photographs for reference
A pair of early 19th century mahogany armorial crested hall chairs the lobed tablet form backs centred with brass carrying handles and painted armorial crests within reeded circular frames, depicting a dexter arm embowed, the hand gauntleted grasping a battle-axe, over solid seats and turned baluster front legs and sabre back legs. -2
An ancient Luristan (northern Persia, now Iran), bronze axe head curved and flared blade with moulded top edge, three raised ridges emanating from mid-blade terminating in wrap effect to the cylindrical pole shaft with four conical projections to the butt, nice patination with light sediment, on later wooden display handle, blade edge 3in. (7.6cm.) overall width from top edge tip to tip of butt spike 7¼in. (18.4cm.), 2½in. (6.4cm.) high.
