A Skit Note sold by Luffman, at 377 Strand, London, for Self, Lapstone, Staytape, Tossup & Winem, 2 Pence, 6 February 1806, promising to pay ‘Coll Pattypan & Sam Roarer Esq or Bearer, on the erection of a Statue of the late Heaven-born Minister composed of Pure Puff Paste, or Papier-machee, or Calf’s-head jelly, in Guildhall’, signed by Tim Tartlet and Sam Noisymouth, with a vignette showing what appears to be a gibbet, labelled ‘We restore liberty, and rank among the best correctives for baseness’, mounting traces, good fine and a very scarce original printing for this design £100-£150 --- This note is probably ironic, as it suggests that the axe and gibbet are restorers of liberty. The names and suggestions of statues made of unsuitable materials are all highly Cruikshankian.

Los 92

S.W.Fores No. 4, for Self, Taffy Bull, Andrew Bull & Pat Bull, 2 Pence, 4 June 1818, promising to pay ‘McCree, Trottoff & Co. or Bearer, when Melvillism shall have received its just reward and when its effects also shall have ceased in every department of the British Government’, signed by John Bull and Saml Brownstout, with a vignette showing a bugler, axe and rope, labelled ‘10th Report!! Beware of us!!’, toned, staple holes at left, otherwise extremely fine £100-£150 --- This note appears to be a simple protest against radicalism in the United Kingdom, and implies that the ‘just reward’ for such behaviour is hanging! Of course, it is quite likely that the entire note is actually ironic, and is actually in support of radical thinking.
