A WHITE AND YELLOW JADE AX, FU, NEOLITHIC PERIODChina, c. 3rd millennium. The quite thick yet translucent blade is elegantly shaped and of rectangular form, flaring slightly toward the sharp beveled edge, pierced from the front side with a hafting hole. The jade is of a fine white tone with yellow and russet shadings as well as cloudy inclusions, that look like lambent flames when held against the sunlight (see detail image).Provenance: Galerie Beer, Brussels, 20 June 1951 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Chinese art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Chinese works of art. In 1938 they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. They kept close contact with the famous English collector Sir Harry Garner (1891-1977) and noted Czech collector and expert Fritz Low-Beer (1906-1976).Condition: Good condition with wear, minor signs of weathering and erosions, minor chips and losses to the edges. AN IMPERIAL YELLOW-GROUND GAUZE TWELVE-SYMBOL 'DRAGON' ROBE, JIFU, MOST LIKELY MADE FOR THE EMPRESS DOWAGER CIXI, CHINA, c. 1861-1875Superbly worked in gauze with couched gold thread and satin stitch on the front and back with nine five-clawed dragons and shou medallions, amidst dense stylized clouds interspersed with bats confronting double peaches, auspicious characters and the twelve imperial symbols above the terrestrial diagram with lishui stripe at the hem, all picked out in shades of blue, green, purple, red, and ochre, and reserved on an Imperial yellow ground. With a black-ground dragon border at the collar, cuffs and mid-sleeves, and a second narrow band of stylized wan diapered design on black ground. The lack of a front and back vent and the inclusion of sleeve extensions identify this as a woman's robe.Provenance: The Property of a Gentleman. Christie's New York, 21-22 September 1995, lot 517. An important American collection of Chinese robes, acquired from the above. To the side, a Christie's label, '22 Sep 95 Sale 8220 Lot 517.' Note that according to Christies “it appears that the Empress Dowager used all Twelve Symbols" (on her robes) “when she ruled during the minority of her son" (see the corresponding auction catalog entry from 1995).Condition: The present robe is likely the finest example of an Imperial twelve-symbol robe that exists. It is exceptionally well-preserved and remains in superb condition overall. There are only minimal signs of wear, with very few loose threads present. There are no stains, spots, or soiling, and the robe has not suffered any material loss whatsoever. The colors of the robe are remarkably vibrant and sharp. It is important to note that this particular robe has never been exposed to sunlight or displayed. It may have been worn on one or two occasions, but certainly not more frequently. In general, the discovery of a robe in such pristine condition is an exceptionally rare occurrence.Dimensions: Length 129 cm, Width 183 cm (across sleeves)Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 115Price: GBP 112,562 or approx. A LARGE FAMILLE ROSE 'WU SHUANG PU' OCTAGONAL VASE, CHINA, 19TH CENTURYOf square section with cropped corners, the baluster body supported on a short waisted foot and rising to a slender neck with a flared mouth. The exterior finely painted in bright enamels with heroes and heroines from the Wu Shuang Pu with accompanying inscriptions. Sun Quan, Di Renjie, Fu Sheng, and Wu Zetian are named on their flanking cropped corners, alternating high and low, and an epithet for each written above their emblems, along with excerpts from their stories in the Wu Shuang Pu above and below each figure.Provenance: English trade. Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and firing irregularities. The rim with a shallow chip.Weight: 3,161 g Dimensions: Height 38.9 cm Wu Shuang Pu ('Table of Peerless Heroes') by Jin Guliang is a book of woodcut prints, first printed in 1694, early on in the Qing dynasty. This book contains the biographies and imagined portraits of 40 notable heroes and heroines from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, all accompanied by a brief introduction and guided by a related poem in Yuefu style. The illustrations from the book were widely distributed and re-used, often as motifs on Chinese porcelain.Di Renjie (630-700), formally Duke Wenhui of Liang, was a Chinese politician of the Tang and Wu Zhou dynasties, twice serving as chancellor during the reign of Wu Zetian. He was one of the most celebrated officials of Wu Zetian's reign and was thus included in Wu Shuang Pu. He is depicted on this lot wearing polychrome robes with floral medallions.Fu Sheng (268-178 BC) was a Chinese philosopher and writer. He was a Confucian scholar of the Qin and Western Han dynasties of ancient China, famous for saving the Confucian classic Shangshu ('Book of Documents') from the book burning of the first Qin emperor. Fu Sheng is recognized as one of the most important Confucians of the Han Dynasty. He is often venerated in Confucian temples along with other sages, and has been a subject of many poems, essays, and paintings. He is depicted on this lot seated on a rock ledge and above him are his emblematic books.Wu Zetian (624-705) was the first and only female emperor in Chinese history. She subsequently founded and ruled the Wu Zhou dynasty of China from 690 to 705. She was the only female sovereign in the history of China widely regarded as legitimate. Under her 40-year reign, China grew larger, becoming one of the great powers of the world, its culture and economy revitalized, and corruption in the court reduced. She was removed from power in a coup and died a few months later. She is depicted on this lot wearing her imperial robes, and above her is Mount Song where her rule was legitimized during the Feng Shan.Sun Ce (175-200) was a Chinese military general, politician, and warlord who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was the eldest child of Sun Jian, who had found the Heirloom Seal of the Realm when his forces occupied the evacuated Han imperial capital of Luoyang, in the course of the campaign against Dong Zhuo, and later suffered a violent death during the Battle of Xiangyang when Sun Ce was only 16. Upon his father's death, Sun Ce inherited the seal and gave it to Yuan Shu so that he might lend him troops to take revenge for his uncle, who had been fighting Warlord Lu Kang. The young Sun Quan is depicted on this lot wearing heavy armor with a sheathed sword, holding a large axe, with the Heirloom Seal of the Realm painted above.Expert's note: The Heirloom Seal of the Realm, also known in English as the Imperial Seal of China, was a Chinese jade seal allegedly carved out of the Heshibi, a sacred piece of jade. The Seal can safely be described as the most important and valuable lost artifact in the world. The Seal was created in 221 BC, shortly after Qin Shi Huang unified China and established the Qin dynasty, China's first imperial dynasty. It then served as the imperial Chinese seal throughout the next millennium of Chinese history, and its possession was seen as a physical symbol of the Mandate of Heaven. The Heirloom Seal was subsequently lost around the end of the Tang dynasty or during the earlier Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Several seals have since been claimed as the lost Heirloom Seal, but none have held up under scrutiny.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams Edinburgh, 24 November 2011, lot 432 Price: GBP 3,125 or approx. They include a great number of ornaments, tools, weapons, horse fittings, and a smaller number of vessels including situlae and are characterized by a wide range of idiosyncratic forms and a highly stylized conception of human and animal representation. Those from recorded excavations were generally found in burials. A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE CARVED ALABASTER RELIEF PANEL OF THE RESURRECTION MID/LATE 15TH CENTURY Depicting Christ rising from the tomb, his foot on a sleeping soldier panel 47.5 x23cm, frame 58.5 x 36cm Provenance: Private collection in Jersey Sotheby's London, The Ronald A. Lee Collection, 28 Nov 2001, lot 8, where purchased by Robert Kime Literature: Francis Cheetham, "English Medieval Alabasters With a Catalogue of the Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum", Boydell Press, 2005This panel belongs to a group of small-scale altarpieces and panels produced by the 'alabastermen', 'kervers' and 'marblers' working in and around Nottinghamshire from the 14th century up until the early 16th century. The alabaster was mined from a small area in the middle of England- from South Derbyshire and into Staffordshire. These hand carved devotional pieces would usually have been painted and sometimes part gilded with areas of natural polished alabaster left in contrast. Like the examples at Compton Verney, the Walters Art Museum, and the panel sold from the collection of Sir Nicholas Goodison at Christie's in 2022, each shares the same composition layout- the figure of Christ rising from the tomb, his right leg stepping over a braced fence to step onto a sleeping soldier, his cross-staff in his left hand and right hand raised in blessing (missing from this example). Cheetham records at least 130 surviving examples of this Passion scene- perhaps the most popular chosen devotional subject. For similar examples please see: Christie's London, The Collection of Sir Nicholas Goodison, 25th May 2022, lot 66 Christie's London, London Living - Wilton Crescent, Belgravia & Avenue Road, Regents Park, 26th October 2011, lot 1070 Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. As per the extra images the panel has old breaks and various levels of repairs and restoration. The main breaks seem to have occurred in a diagonal shape from the knees of seated right hand figure and down leftwards. The lower section looks to have been in at least three pieces with old glue and some surface repair, infill and restoration. Additionally there are areas, in a different colour tone, notably both upper corners and lower left corner that are later remedial infill. Some of the raised details such as the axe blade are almost certainly later and there are fault lines, cracks and flaws. The panel is in a sealed frame making reverse inspection and confirmation impossible. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report.
