Kachinas are figures made by the Hopi and other Pueblo peoples to represent spirits or aspects of their religious beliefs. This doll is standing upright on a circular wooden base, adorned with a necklace of blue and white beads and features white and black body paint, wearing denim jeans and white boots. In its hands, the doll holds a gourd and a wooden stick or tool, and a vase in the other hand. Signed on the base by the artist Cal Yestewa, a respected artist from the Hopi-Tewa community. Baba was his pet name as a child and Arthur was his younger brother; the family were touring in Switzerland at the time. Later his father, Lord George William Russell, son of the 6th Duke, was ambassador to Berlin from 1835-41 and Hastings was partly educated at Stuttgart, attending lectures by Prof. Schwab.The third item is attributed to Lord George William Russell on Library Hub but he was out of England at that time and it is more likely that the translator was his younger brother Lord John, who wrote the fourth work.
