Ca. 100 BC - AD 100 . A beautiful and elegant hammered bronze strigil formed from a single narrow sheet with a wide, concave blade that curved and tapers to a rounded end. The blade straightens out to a slender handle with folded sides, narrowing dramatically along the verso, and ending at an ovoid terminal. The handle of the instrument is embellished with a foliate pattern with a central heart-shaped leaf. The entire tool is covered in thick areas of pale green, dark green, and russet-hued patina. Size: 285mm x 20mm; Weight: 115g Provenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the German art market in the 1990s. Ca. 945–712 B.C.. A carved stone right hand from a larger human figure. The hand is made in a naturalistic manner and geometric position. Held firmly inside of clenched fingers is a slender, cylindrical handle, perhaps the handle of a tool or other daily implement. T/Lt E W K Walton GC DSC RN ( Engineer Officer. ) Account of Deed, At about 12 noon on 24th August 1946, while on a sledging journey, a member of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey Team fell through a badly bridged crevasse and disappeared. He had fallen some 40 feet and was jammed in a narrow part of the crevasse. Ropes were lowered to him but he could not get them round himself properly and it was impossible to pull him up as he was jammed in the ice. Lieutenant Walton volunteered to be lowered into the crevasse to free him. It was not possible to use an Ice axe in the restricted space, so a spike was sawn off and used as a hand tool to chip away at the ice. After three hours, during which period Lieutenant Walton had been lowered down the crevasse five times, gradually working his way along, he reached the trapped man and freed him so that he could be pulled to the surface. William Goad GC George Cross Holder, Won his George Cross 1942 while serving in HMS Ashanti went over the side in freezing water and rescued an unconscious man. It was blowing a full gale.
