Mohamed Melehi (Morocco, 1936-2020)Golden Days oil on panel, framedsigned 'Melehi' and dated '2007' on the verso, executed in 2007110 x 100cm (43 5/16 x 39 3/8in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, LondonFormerly property from a private collection, Saudi Arabia'The wave is force, strength of sensuality; it is water, it is fire. If you look through traditional African art, there is always a wave, and I took the wave many years ago as my alphabetic tool. I use it the way I wish to, and I wander through it. You can see that; I am happy with it. By the way, I actually concentrated my studies more in sculpture than in painting. I consider myself a painter afterwards. As you can no doubt notice, my work is very sculptural. The wave is a source of tension and energy for the mind, and for the body as well; it creates movement.'- Mohammed MelehiFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Charles Hossein Zenderoudi (Iran, born 1937)WHO'S WATCHING oil on canvassigned 'Hossein Zenderoudi' and dated '74', executed in 197485 x 132cm (33 7/16 x 51 15/16in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, New York'To create a painting, I begin with the preliminary study, which consists of sketches on paper, followed immediately by the painting of letters and colouring on canvas... I am thus able to immediately express my spontaneous feelings on canvas. Sometimes I leave a canvas to work on another, this is like improvisation in music, for I treasure freedom more than anything else. I couldn't be what I am if I didn't have freedom to express my lyricism. I don't believe in teaching painting, since I do not believe that technical training is required to make one a great painter. Painting can be done with any tool or any piece of equipment, I believe all schools of fine art, all over the world, should be shut down'- Charles Hossein Zenderoudi, Midi Libre, No 9401, 9 April 1971Provenance:Property from a private French collectionCharles Hossein Zenderoudi is one of Iran's most accomplished modern artists, as a founding father Iranian neo-traditionalism Zenderoudi is a master of blending traditional Persian motif's within a distinctly avant-garde aesthetic. His choice of subject matter, calligraphy, has historically been the most established mode of formal artistic expression prevalent in Iran, but, by emphasising form over meaning, and by stripping the written word down to its aesthetic, structural, fundaments, Zenderoudi subverts the traditional values of Persian calligraphy. Zenderoudi's text is intentionally illegible and carries no literal meaning, freeing it from the constraint of linguistic limitation, and imbuing it with a sense of universality which rescues the archaic practice of calligraphy from obscurity, giving it renewed relevance in a contemporary context.Zenderoudi's compositions pay homage to centuries of Persian religious imagery and employ a systematic repetition of letter-forms that finds its genesis in the mystical practice of Sufi numerologists, who believed in the spiritual significance of singular letters and worked these principles into hugely intricate talismanic charts. Zenderoudi's methodical compositions, whilst not accurately following the grammar or axioms of numerology, capture the aesthetic and conceptual qualities of its cryptic nature.Zenderoudi's early works focused on dense talismanic imagery, mixing iconography, freehand script and numerals. The density of these compositions sought to capture the visual intensity of popular religious expression in Iran, where banners, standards, altars, murals and mosques exuberantly adorn the urban landscape.Works from the present series, composed in the 1970's, mark a shift towards a more avant-garde, patterned, technical and measured approach to calligraphy. The crowded iconography of the early works is replaced by a greater focus on singular and recurring letter-forms, which exhibit a formal refinement lacking in their earlier counterparts. The present work also marks a conceptual shift away from the more overtly traditional subject matters and more towards a pure, patterned aesthetic which emphasises the meditative and visual elements of letter depiction over their linguistic connotation.Measured but spontaneous, technical yet effuse, Zenderoudi' manipulates Persian calligraphy with effortless ease, boasting a visual scope which faithfully captures the salient elements of Iran's traditional popular religious aesthetic. Rendered with the use of rich and vibrant colours, his canvases replicate the tonal and textural qualities of the votive art so common to the Iranian urban landscape.Almost rhythmic in its grace, balance and composition, the present work is one of the finest examples of Zenderoudi's work from this period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Saturation divers who had previously been issued with Rolex Submariners found that during decompression, the pressure inside the watch would force its way out through the weakest point which usually resulted in the loss of the plexiglass. In response to this, Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller. With a helium escape valve on the side, a greater depth rating of 610 meters and the removal of the cyclops from the crystal, the Sea-Dweller is a true tool watch and has been favoured by professional divers ever since its introduction. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - a previously unseen photograph of Gandhi taken by either his personal physician Doctor Kanuga, or Kanuga's wife Nandubahen in 1947 at Birla House, New Delhi. Gandhi stayed at the mansion house for a period of 144 days before his assassination on 30th January 1948. The small black and white photograph shows Gandhi seated, possibly with a spinning wheel or similar wooden tool. He is seen wearing a hat, and linen robe in typical form. To the rear of the photograph is written 'Gandhiji, 1947, Birla House'. 10cm x 7.5cm. Two light folds, which whilst present, do not particularly detract from the image. Copyright status is unknown, and the lot is not offered with copyright. The hat which Gandhi is seen wearing can also be seen present in published photographs taken in December of 1947, so it can be presumed this photograph is of a similar age - late December. This photograph therefore represents one of the last known photographs of Gandhi prior to his assassination at Birla House (a few yards away from where this image was taken). Unique.  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.

1953 Jaguar C-Type 'Tool-Room copy' 1953/1996 Transmission: manualMileage:2660One of the most exquisite designed ever penned by Jaguar chief aerodynamicists, Malcolm Sayer, the C-Type Jaguar is widely regarded as one of the most exquisite racing cars ever produced. The lightweight tubular chassis, designed by Bob Knight, was mated to a tuned version of the contemporary roadgoing XK120 taking it from 205bhp in SU carburettor form and raising it to 220bhp with Weber intakes. The 1951 race at Le Sarthe proved to be a nail-biting race for Jaguar with unfortunate mechanical failures for chassis 001 (oil feed pipe damage) and 002 (conrod), however 003 recorded its first victory at Le Mans for Jaguar’s XK120C, recording an average speed of 93mph and proving their reliability and speed. In 1953, the feat was repeated in spades with C-Types coming home in 1st, 2nd and 4th place, helped enormously by the fact that they now had disc brakes on all four wheels. That it was also arrestingly beautiful was just a bonus, a classic example of form following function. With only 52 ever built it is, unsurprisingly, a hugely sought-after motor car with prices often exceeding many millions of pounds, assuming you could find one in the first place. The high value of the originals has resulted in a reticence to use them in regular competition which has made way for the toolroom recreations, cars built to exacting original specifications using period components and materials. This superb all aluminium tool-room example of the final 1953 cars was hand-crafted in New Zealand some 30 years ago utilising a tuned XK120, 3.4 litre engine, drive train and components assembled onto a near-exact recreation of the C-Type chassis built by Peter Bruin who constructed a number of winning chassis for the McLaren Company in New Zealand. As a 1953 specification the car is equipped with disc brakes and triple Weber carburettors fed via a cold air box from the beautifully crafted bonnet air intake which identifies the 1953 cars over earlier ones. The tooling and body bucks were made with direct reference to an original car and Jaguar works drawings, it was then put together by highly respected racing car builder, Frank van Lingen in the early 1990s. It was first registered in 1996 and imported into the UK in 2020 where it is registered as a ‘Jaguar Sports Car’ carrying a period correct Hampshire number plate alongside the FIA class Essex Historic Technical Passport drafted and ready for application by the new owner. Examples built to such accuracy and quality do not appear for sale often hence this car could represent a great investment opportunity.Interested parties should note that the description in the catalogue, printed in error, does not apply to this vehicle please ignore it in its entirety. Full and accurate details of this stunning car are published here

Professor Ablade Glover occupies a central position in Ghana's contemporary art scene as both artist and teacher. Born in Accra in 1934, he received his early education in Presbyterian mission schools. He subsequently undertook teacher training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi before winning a scholarship to study textile design at the Central School of Art and Design in London in 1959. Following a short period teaching in Ghana, Glover returned to the UK in 1964 to study art education at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was here, at the suggestion of his teacher, that he first began experimenting with the palette knife as a tool to apply paint directly to his canvases. He explains:'I use the palette knife which gives me the freedom I want. The palette knife gives you the feeling to express yourself immediately. You take it off when you don't want it so there is an immediacy of the palette knife and I love it.'Glover applies thick layers of impasto to his canvases and then uses the palette knife to spread the brightly coloured pigments across the surface of the work to create textural slices of paint. This technique is put to the service of portraying his chosen subject matter; bustling market scenes, crowds of figures at prayer, the rooftops of shanty towns, and densely grown forests. The gestural handling of paint allows the works to hover between figuration and abstraction. As Glover explains of his depictions of these urban topologies, '[t]he scenes I paint – the markets, the crowds – you can never wholly capture them because they are always changing... My aim can only be to capture the tempo'. Indeed, the undulating textured surfaces of his paintings echo the rhythms of daily life in Ghana.Painted in 1988, Two troubles, one god demonstrates the breadth of Glover's experimentation with his chosen tool, the palette knife. The dense sweeps of paint in the background articulate buildings and the head wraps of women nestled together in the throng of the crowd. In the foreground, three women are portrayed in profile, evidencing Glover's enduring navigation of the figurative and the abstract within his painterly practice. Dressed in warm, buttery yellow tones, the women emulate a quiet strength which is juxtaposed with the dynamic bustle of their environment. Ablade Glover has garnered an international reputation for his distinctive painterly style. His work can be found in the collections of the Imperial Palace, Tokyo; the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris; and the Africa First Collection, Tel Aviv. He has exhibited his work extensively in West Africa, Europe, the USA, and Japan. Reflecting the esteem that he is held in by the international art community, Glover has been the recipient of several national and international awards including the Order of the Volta in Ghana and has been made a Life Fellow of the Royal Academy of Art in London. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
