RARE FIJI TATTOO IMPLEMENT, mid-late 19th C., with triple-toothed flat bone head bound with sennit to short rattan handle, 19cms long, and a small mallet, probably a non-native associated museum curio (2)Provenance: Annie Elizabeth Tookey, Methodist Missionary c.1860-1874; lent to Borough of Nuneaton Museum & Gallery from c. 1969; thence by descent to Nottinghamshire vendor.Auctioneer's notes: Polynesian tattoos were usually monochrome and made use of zones and bands rendered in other art forms such as bark-cloth and pottery. The designs, as expected, draw on shapes and objects used or revered among the islanders. Complex and varied combinations of recognized designs and motifs could be used to signify an individual's identity with exactness, reflecting the complex system of kinship, chiefly rank, and mixed marriages among, for example, Fijians, Tongans and Samoans. In Fiji, where the most esteemed tattoo artists were women, older women had tattoos around the corners of the mouth that not only spoke of how many children she had but also disguised the wrinkles that form in that area of the face as a result of ageing. Fijian women also wore sexually significant tattoos on the groin and buttocks, which were often considered her 'best ornament'. C.f. Pitt Rivers Museum accession number 1899.62.432 for a tool collected by Sir William McGregor and H. A. Tufnell, and donated by Henry Anson in 1899.Comments: little evidence of staining.

The wooden postcard with information on the edition in the print. - With light surface soiling in few spots, with some slightly uneven patination and occasional wit isolated, light corrosion. The postcard with slight rubbing and small chip on verso. Overall a very well-preserved, captivating arrangement. - Schellmann 104 (for the work by Beuys). - The nail, undoubtedly the most striking element in the artist's oeuvre, has never been regarded by Uecker himself as a tool of destruction, but as an element that connects, that links the material to be punched through with art. In 2024 Djourina published her first comprehensive monograph with DISTANZ Berlin. Her artistic practice explores light phenomena as a subject, tool and object of research. Some works contain biographical elements, such as the use of self-made pinhole cameras sent by post, attached to pigeons or made from a suitcase. Other works explore the light of living organisms such as fungi and algae. Djourina often uses historical photographic techniques to capture the concept of touch in the image. She draws and paints in the dark of the photo lab with different light sources, creating colourful dynamic compositions that are all unique.
