Derivatives of the M3 are developed by BMW’s in-house motorsport division, where BMW have continued to build impressive racing credentials. The M3 Evolution was upgraded from 2,990cc (282bhp) in November 1995 to 3,201cc delivering 321bhp from the legendary S50B32 inline six engine, plus a new six-speed manual gearbox along with other more minor upgrades. Popular amongst circuit competition drivers, the E36 is widely considered as one of the best handling cars of the 1990s and has become a very rare sight on todays roads, due to their popularity with track day enthusiasts, meaning completely original and un-touched examples like this are very hard to come by.This example is specified in stunning Estoril blue metallic with a black Nappa leather interior and the rarer ‘sunflower’ alloy wheels. The car was our vendors company car from brand new and he purchased the car from his company after one year, meaning he has been the sole driver and owner of this car from new, cherishing and always ensuring it has been maintained impeccably. The car is specified with the SMG gearbox, which was cutting edge at the time and allows the driver to change gear with a simple pull or push on the gear selector, or with buttons on the steering wheel. This is an incredibly original example, which comes with all the accessories such as torch, first aid kit, all keys and manuals, tool kit and warning triangle and it has lived a very cossetted life. The paintwork is showing some stone chips on the front end and a few small scratches here and there, to be expected with a 26 year old car and the interior is in excellent condition throughout. In 2002, at approximately 38,000 miles, the engine was completely rebuilt by BMW main dealers. In March 2017, the SMG cables, linkages, relays and fuses were replaced. In July 2020, minor oil leaks were investigated, leading to the differential being removed, stripped and rebuilt and in October 2022, the water pump was replaced. In June 2023, new brake pads and discs were fitted, along with the alloy wheels being fully refurbished; the power steering hose/pipe also being replaced. The car was taken to CPC Engineering in September 2023, who checked the Vanos and determined it was working well. A total of twenty stamps are present in the service book, all from main dealers and BMW specialists, except for four recent services, which were carried out by a local garage when our vendor relocated to Cornwall. The most recent service (Inspection II) was carried out in June 2024 by BMG BMW specialist. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a single owner, original M3 with full documentation in excellent condition. Lot 229

The Aston Martin DP214 is a rare and legendary race car, designed in the early 1960s as a part of Aston Martin’s "Development Project" series. Created specifically to compete in high stakes “World Endurance races” such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans; the DP214 holds a special place in Aston Martin's racing history. Martin Brewer’s involvement with the DP214 has helped to keep this iconic car alive in the world of historic motorsports. Only two original DP214s were built, making them incredibly rare. The car was an evolution of the DB4 GT and, more specifically, the DB4 GT Zagato, both of which were high-performance models of the DB4. The DP214 was developed by Ted Cutting, Aston Martin’s chief designer at the time, who focused on reducing weight and improving aerodynamics for better performance on the track. This design work was essential in creating a vehicle capable of competing against other powerful race cars of its era, like Ferrari’s 250 GTO. The DP214 featured a lightweight aluminium body and an upgraded version of Aston Martin’s straight-six engine. This was paired with a five-speed manual transmission, which was rare for its time. The car could reach speeds of over 180 mph on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, an impressive feat for the era. Its design emphasized aerodynamic efficiency, with a sleek, elongated body, a rear spoiler for stability at high speed and carefully sculpted lines to reduce drag. Martin Brewer’s involvement with the Aston Martin DP214 comes through his efforts in preserving and racing a tool room copy of the original DP214. Given that one of the original DP214s was destroyed in a tragic accident at the Nürburgring in dreadful weather conditions, certain enthusiasts have undertaken the challenge of keeping the spirit of the DP214 alive through accurately crafted replicas. The two most prominent recreations, of which this is one, have been built to exacting standards, using original design specifications and where possible, period-correct materials and genuine Aston Martin parts. They offer a rare glimpse into the past and allow modern audiences to experience the DP214's performance and style.Purchased by Martin Brewer some 18 years ago, this tool room copy of DP214 has competed at many of the British circuits and extensively in Europe, as well as competing at Laguna Seca in California. The car was originally built by Adrian Johnson at Post Vintage Engineers and has been continuously fettled by the Runnymede team along the way. The engine, which produces approximately 385 BHP was painstakingly rebuilt by James Hipwell at Warren Heath Engineering, the build of which included a steel crankshaft, a lightened flywheel, high compression pistons and Carillo con-rods, with the 12 plug cylinder head being gas flowed and with fuel being supplied via triple 50DCOE Weber carburettors. A very sturdy custom-built roll-cage adds to the driver safety, together with five-point harness safety belts. The car has proved to be utterly reliable and Martin has enjoyed considerable success at the wheel of this rare Aston Martin. The car’s achievements in competition are too numerous to list but include two wins at Laguna Seca in Monterey and a win at Silverstone in 2018. Perhaps one of his most pleasurable achievements, was sharing the car with Iain Rowley at the Spa Summer Classic in 2019, when the car was last raced and coming second against strong opposition at the age of 75. In 2023 Martin spent over £12,000 on the car with Rex Woodgate & Co at Silverstone in preparation for the 2024 season, although unfortunately, it has not been raced this year for personal reasons. Race cars can often look a little scruffy and bruised, this is not the case with this Aston Martin. It always presents well and can be used as a road car should you choose to do so. Martin Brewer has been known to drive the car to the Le Mans classic, such is the flexibility of this Aston Martin. It is supplied with a V5C registration document and very comprehensive history files. One of the remaining original Aston Martin Project cars sold in 2018 for $21,455,000 including buyer’s premium by R M Sotheby’s. This ‘tool room copy’ appears to be realistically estimated given the quality and history of the car. This DP214 is not merely a showpiece but has been built to perform on the track, embodying the legacy of Aston Martin’s engineering prowess and racing spirit. The DP214 remains an iconic chapter in Aston Martin’s racing history, cherished and celebrated by enthusiasts who ensure its legacy endures. Consigned by Stewart Banks. [Abbey Scenery 204; B. Adams, London illustrated 1604-1851 (1983), no. 72, p.170-5], folio (405 x 300mm.), T. Bensley for T. Malton, 1792-[1801]Footnotes:ONE OF THE FIRST AND FINEST SERIES OF LONDON VIEWS - RARE HAND-COLOURED COPY IN A HANDSOME BAYNTUN RIVIERE BINDING.Thomas Malton (1748-1804) exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, and was principally known for his views of the capital's streets, squares and buildings. He also designed scenery for Covent Garden Theatre and ran a drawing school whose students included Turner and Girtin. The 100 meticulously observed views in the Picturesque Tour Through London were all composed, engraved and aquatinted by Malton, a remarkable endeavour at a time when the aquatint process was still in its infancy in England. The work represents the first large collection of aquatints of London, or anywhere else in the country, and includes views of Chelsea Hospital, Hyde Park, Grosvenor Square, Westminster Abbey, The Horse Guards, Charing Cross, St. Martin's in the Fields, The Adelphi, Covent Garden, Somerset House, St. Paul's, Mansion House, The Bank of England, Royal Exchange and Greenwich Hospital.'The Picturesque Tour is remarkable, if not unique, in that the 100 large plates of which it is composed were all engraved and aquatinted by the artist in person' (Bernard Adam). 'Like Horwood's Plan – and unlike works like Modern London or the Microcosm – Malton's book was pitched as a solo endeavour, a vision of the city produced by a man keen to establish his cultural credentials and capable of fine artistry, accurate perception, technological innovation and skilful composition... London looms in Malton in ways that most other contemporary illustrations fail to capture. The metropolis is not a threatening city in his works, but it is one that reaches up in great spires and vaulting arches, a place of proud ingenuity and soaring, untroubled magnificence' (Matthew Sangster, www.romanticlondon.org/maltons-picturesque-tour-intro/).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
