PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973)David et Bethsabée (d'après Lucas Cranach) (Bloch 439; Mourlot 109) Lithograph, 1947, on wove paper, first state (of ten), signed and numbered 43/50 in pencil, printed by Mourlot, published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris, the full sheet, with a deckle edge above and below, with pale time staining, generally in very good condition, framedSheet 650 x 495mm. (25 9/16 x 19 1/2in.)Footnotes:As Picasso reached the latter part of his life, he looked for inspiration in the work of past masters, such as Cranach, Rembrandt and Goya, seeking to align himself with these great artists and once again, to create work which was fresh and innovative. From the late 1940s to early 1960s he made studies in various media of particular works. Picasso's dealer at the time, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, sent him a catalogue from a 1937 exhibition in Berlin which included the painting of David and Bathsheba by Lucas Cranach the Elder, depicting the biblical story of King David spying on Bathsheba as she bathes. The catalogue was in black and white and Picasso decided that a black and white lithograph would produce a more graphic image. His admiration for Cranach was such that he respected the original composition, with the king on a balcony watching Bathsheba and her ladies gathered around a pool. The figures are in 16th century attire and only Bathsheba's bare ankles are visible, this modesty highlighting her innocence. For his depiction of the king, who will dishonour Bathsheba, Picasso drew a disproportionately large head and harp, creating a sense of menace and alluding to his evil intentions. The work was created by applying a pen and ink wash to a zinc plate and using a scraper tool to reveal the figures. This is the first of ten states, which gives a faithful rendering of the subject as imagined by Cranach, with richly inked areas bringing the figures to life. In the subsequent reworking of the plate, the image becomes darker and more abstract. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Saturation divers who had previously been issued with Rolex Submariners found that during decompression, the pressure inside the watch would force its way out through the weakest point which usually resulted in the loss of the plexiglass. In response to this, Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller. With a helium escape valve on the side, a greater depth rating of 610 meters and the removal of the cyclops from the crystal, the Sea-Dweller is a true tool watch and has been favoured by professional divers ever since its introduction. This particular version of the reference 1665 succeeded the Double Red Sea-Dweller in 1977. The most noticeable difference was that the red text on the dial was replaced with white text, earning the watch the nickname of 'Great White' amongst collectors. The current example is even more unusual in that it is fitted with a rare rail dial. The rail dial was produced for only two years, between 1977 and 1979, and is so called because of how the 'C' in both 'Chronometer' and 'Certified' line up almost perfectly, reminiscent of the parallel lines of a train track. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Turn-O-Graph however was soon rendered obsolete in demand by the more functional dual-time zone GMT Master launched in 1954. Production of the 6202 ceased in the early 1960s after a relatively short and limited production making examples harder to come by in todays market. The current example has a highly attractive tropicalised dial which is almost celestial like in the way it fades from gold to black. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
