Lever (Charles, 1806-1872). An original manuscript bound in two volumes for the novel The Bramleighs of Bishop`s Folly, c.1868, approx. 600 leaves, written in Charles Lever`s small neat hand, and with his alterations and corrections, on rectos only, some finger-soiling and marks, occn. marginal repairs, one leaf partially excised, some pencillings in a later hand (mostly numbers), early 20th c. green crushed morocco by Riviere & Son, signed on front turn-ins, extrems. sl. rubbed in places, dotted line dec. raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second, third, and fourth compartments, remainder gilt panelled, with shamrock tool on black onlay within gilt oval border, and volute cornerpieces, date lettered at foot, covers with gilt double fillet and single fillet border, with oval shamrock onlay repeated at corners surrounded by volute tools, double fillet on edges, turn-ins with gilt border of flower and seedhead roll, bead roll between single fillets, and scalloped tulip roll, 8vo. Probably a late draft of Lever`s sixty-nine chapter novel, which appears to be largely complete but without chapters twenty-eight to thirty inclusive, and possibly with one or two other pages lacking. (with early ms. name on verso showing through) and addn. title-page to each, marbled endpapers, contemp. tan calf, gilt double line decorated raised bands between rope rolls, gilt lettered direct in second, third, and fourth compartments, remainder with musical trophy tool in centre, with volute cornerpieces, lettered direct at foot, covers with gilt double fillet and blind scalloped roll border, gilt roll on edges and turn-ins, 12mo. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, 9 vols., 1st ed., York and London, 1760-1767, with Sterne`s signature in ink in vols. 5, 7 and 9 as called-for, eng. frontis. in vol. 4 (often found incorrectly placed in vol. 3), half-titles present in vols. 4 and 9 (vols. 5 and 6 with half-titles discarded), vol. 1 with E5 printed black on both sides, vol. 3 with the inserted marbled leaf between L4 and L5, vol. 4 with L2r left blank for the reader`s imaginary portrait of the Widow Wadman, vol. 5 without initial blank, armorial bookplate of Robert Goelet loosely inserted in first vol. (faint adhesive mark on front pastedowns from a previous bookplate), blue endpapers, a.e.g., late 19th c. mottled calf by Riviere, with his ink stamp on verso of front free endpapers, extrems. rubbed, gilt rule decorated raised bands between hound`s tooth rolls, gilt lettered labels in second and third compartments, remainder with central flower tool surrounded by stars and flowers, with volute cornerpieces, date lettered direct at foot, covers with gilt double fillet border, gilt single fillet on edges, gilt dec. turn-ins, sm. 8vo, housed together in custom-made partitioned book box. Imprints correspond to Rothschild 1970. Volume 1 is the correct first York printing (i.e. without the footnote on p.134); volume 2 bears the correct York printed title-page but some of the text appears to be taken from the London edition (i.e. the title-page is A1; in the York issue it is printed as part of gathering M). Volumes 3 to 9 are all first edition, first issue (volumes 7 and 8 are the true first edition, not the concealed second edition). (9)

Exhibition catalogues. British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts in thr United Kingdom, 37 issues, 1806-19, 1822-28, 1831, 1834, 1836, 1841, 1846-47, 1849, 1852, 1856, pub. W. Bulmar & Co., some years with two catalogues divided into Old Master and Contemporary works, each issue bound without wrappers as issued, circular library blindstamp to front endpaper and initial title, 19th century half morocco, rubbed and scuffed, 4to & 8vo. Exhibition catalogues from this period are very scarce and an invaluable tool for art historians. The rather lengthy-titled British Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts in the United Kingdom formed in 1805 and disbanded in 1867. (1)

(Occasional spotting or light browning, mostly to first and last few leaves, small marginal tear to frontispiece.) 19th Century blue calf gilt, the covers elaborately tooled with a border of alternating flower-charged vases and foliate scrolls incorporating a bird tool, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (extremities scuffed and rubbed, upper cover detached). - And ten others (11).

Contemporary black calf gilt, the covers with a scrolling bellflower roll tool within fillet borders, the spine gilt in five compartments with raised bands, lettering piece to the second, the other compartments with repeat decoration in gilt (extremities slightly scuffed, spine rubbed and chipped at head). - And twenty-six others, all leather-bound (27).
