Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller Rail Dial, ref. 1665, a rare stainless steel bracelet wristwatch, no. 5865237, circa 1979, automatic movement, 26 jewels, adjusted to 5 positions and temperature, cal. 1570, no. D560577, black dial, dot and baton markers, pointed baton minute and Mercedes hour hands, centre seconds hand, date aperture at 3 o'clock, rotating black bezel with Arabic numeral 10 minute track, screw down crown, screw down back, case, dial and movement signed , on a Rolex Oyster stainless steel bracelet with fold over clasp, diameter 39mm The Sea-Dweller was born after the collaboration between Rolex and the French underwater engineering company Comex in 1967. Initially the Comex divers were using the Submariner, but found there was a risk of the crystal shattering due to the pressure from the build up of helium in the watch. This led to the design of a small valve opposite the crown. When the watch reaches a certain depth beneath the water, the pressure triggers a piston which pushes against a gasket and sealing the watch. When resurfacing the pressure from the helium inside the watch opens the valve and allows the gas to escape. Over the years this iconic tool watch has evolved and been produced with slight differences in dials. These are highly sought after by collectors and are known by various nicknames among the collector community. The Rail Dial earns its nickname from the Cs in chronometer and certified lining up like railway tracks. The Rail Dial was only produced for two short years between 1977 and 1979.
