Tradotti di Latino in Volgare di Iacomo Bosio Agente della medesima Religione nella Corte di Roma, 2 parts in 1, collation: Collation: *6, **4, A-Z4, Aa-Nn4, a-g4, h6; A-P4, titles with woodcut arms of Cardinal Hugues Loubens de Verdalle, Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, Nn4 and h6 blank, some staining and spotting, handsome contemporary Roman brown morocco over pasteboards by Francesco Soresini's workshop, upper cover with painted arms of the Grand Master Hugues Loubens de Verdalle in a gilt medallion surmounted by cardinal's hat, below which the inscription in gilt 'f. vgo de lovbenx verdala car: gran maestro', lower cover with painted arms of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in gilt oval frame, below which the inscription 'del caval. f. fran. hier. bertio' in gilt (Francesco Girolamo Berti), both covers with gilt and blind-stamped filet borders, the gilt in-filled with frieze all'antica and small floral tools, spine in compartments, all but one with central floral tool, the other with morocco title label, joints starting, but holding firm, some chipping of leather, corners worn, rubbed, g.e., small 4to (text block 247 x 170mm.; binding 255 x 189mm.), Rome, Giacomo Tornieri and Giacomo Ruffinello, 1589.⁂ The rarest issue of the Italian translation of the Statuta of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, first printed in Latin in 1589, here in a handsome binding for the dedicatee and patron of the edition Cardinal Hugues Loubens de Verdalle, Grand Master of the Order between 1581 and 1595. The binding was executed by the leading workshop of Francesco Soresini, who was appointed Papal binder on the death of Niccolò Franzese in 1575.Provenance: Grand Master of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, Hugues Loubens de Verdalle (1531-1595; arms); given by him as a gift to Francesco Girolamo Berti (gilt inscription on the lower cover); and then to his brother Fabrizio Berti (ink ownership inscription on the first title 'Di Fra Fabritio Bertio Baglio di Pavia 1595'). British Empire and Trade - India, Persia and the Middle East - The East India Company - Royal Presentation Binding, George III, The Regulating Act of 1773, An Act for establishing certain Regulations for the better Management of the Affairs of the East India Company, as well in India as in Europe/[FI al-sanath al-Saliash `ashar min julus al-Malik Jurj al-Salis, Dasturi bara-yi istihkam-i bandubast-i mushakhkhas banabar bihbudi intizam-i mu` amalat-i Inglish Kampani dar Hindustan chunankih dar Firangistan], London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, Printers to the King's most Excellent Majesty, 1774, 36ff [72pp], the leaves are numbered 1-36 on the recto in Arabic numerals, dual parallel text printed in Persian and English, within ornate decorative frames crested by the crown and crown jewels, flanked by ribbon-tied Adamesque paterae, trailing bellhusks and acanthus scrolls, the base with a shell, contemporary royal armorial binding of two-tone speckled and polished calf, the graduating rectangular arrangement enclosing the Royal Coat of Arms of George III, blocked in gilt, floral roll-tool outer-border, the spine of seven-compartments with raised bands and tooled in gilt with conforming flowers, gilt turn-ins, folio (40.6cm x 26.3cm), [ESTC T145421], [1], ( (faults, margins extensively wormed but with little loss to text yet a few decorative borders have succumbed)Uncommon beyond ESTC and its 7 copies (4 in UK, 3 in North American libraries). A similar copy traced in commerce on the Continent is with an identical typesetting but the text is not enclosed within an engraved frame and it was printed in a smaller folio format (28cm x 23.2cm). The armorial binder's stamp with the Royal Coat of Arms of George III is similar to Stamp 16, British Armorial Bindings, University of Toronoto Libraries, in design and size (74mm x 72mm) but only differing in the lack of a foliate scrolling apron below the motto on our copy. Three of four of the Library's digital sources for this binding are on works of a political nature as well.
