With protective delivery boxes labelled Nanking Cargo. Saucers 11.5cm diam. (4) Good overall condition with no signs of damage or repair.

Service for five persons comprising: Five large dishes; five medium dishes; five small dishes; five saucers; five large bowls; five medium bowls; five lobed cups; five lobed sauce dishes; five spoons; five small spoons. All decorated with birds, insects and peony blooms with six-character marks of Tongzhi (1861-75) to base. Largest dishes 22cm diam. (50)One large dish with a 4cm hairline vertical from rim. Otherwise the rest are in good overall condition. No repairs with minor nicks to rim on some.
Two Chinese tea bowls and saucers, part of the Nanking Cargo, which sank aboard the Geldermalsen in 1752 in the South China Sea. The cargo was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and auctioned by Christie's Amsterdam in 1986, both sets are the Batavian Bamboo and Peony pattern showing a double clump of leafy bamboo to the left of a cluster of flowering peony, the exteriors under chocolate brown glazes, with the original Christie's labels, circa 1750.
