A CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN ARMORIAL PART DINNER SERVICE, WITH ARMS OF STIBBERT, QIANLONG (1736-95), CIRCA 1785 painted with the coat of arms within borders and the motto 'Per Ardua ad Astra', comprising: two baskets and stands, two butter dishes, stands and covers, two custard pots and covers, two pierced-rim dishes, two oval ashets, three octagonal small plates, ten dinner plates, nine soup plates, six cups of which three two-handled, one slop bowl, six tea bowls and eight saucers (61) The arms of Stibbert were granted in 1768 and this service was most likely commissioned by Frederick Stibbert. Little is known of him, although his namesake Frederick Stibbert (b. 1838), heir to a considerable fortune, amassed a vast collection of fine art, armour and antiques which was later bequeathed to the city of Florence, where it is still to be seen today in the Museo Stibbert. The collection includes further pieces from this service. Frederick's father, Thomas, of the Coldstream Guards, fought in the Napoleonic wars, and his grandfather Giles had been Governor of Bengal. A Royal Worcester cased coffee set date codes for 1938, retailed by Mappin & Webb, the rims decorated with a colourful border of flowers above sponged turquoise bands. Comprising: six coffee cups, six saucers and six silver coffee spoons, all contained in a fitted blue case. Provenance: by repute, gifted as a wedding present to Viscount Cowdray and Lady Anne Bridgman upon their marriage on 19th July 1939. From the estate of the late Christopher Sheppard.

(7) Elements of the designs shown here were picked up and recreated on New Hall (especially the Boy in the Window pattern), and also on Swansea pieces from c.1815-17 which echoed the elaborate border as well as the palette used. Gilt a little rubbed, some staining particularly around handle and spout. Side plates (3) - Gilt very rubbed. Saucers (4) - All with rubbed gilt. One has bad star crack to centre, one has faint star crack to centre. Tea cups (6) - Some light rubbing to gilt. One has small chip to foot rim, one has small hair crack from rim. Coffee cups (6) - One badly restored, reglued from two pieces. One has two bad cracks to side.

Stand with section riveted. Star crack to base on one plate. One saucer with hairline crack, one badly cracked and riveted. Some minor chips to base rims of teabowls. On with section riveted. One with chip to rim. One with cracks to body.
