Tray: this has been broken through the middle and crudely restuck. There are some slight losses adjacent to the break, particularly at 12 o’clock (on the front side) and to footrim (on the underside). This could easily be tidied up by a restorer. Teapot: the cover has been broken through and poorly repaired (there are some small losses at the centre and the flange on the underside). Sugar-bowl: the flower finial of the cover has been chipped and poorly restored. Coffee cups: one coffee cup has a very small chip to the footrim (this is minor). Saucers: one saucer has been broken into four sections and has an associated rim chip – these have been poorly repaired, and ideally should be restored again by a restorer. The other saucer has a rim chip and an associated hairline crack which runs to the well / footrim part of the saucer. The box is in distressed condition. The blue shammy-leather lining has been torn in some areas and some of the structural elements to the fitted compartments have been broken (one teacup sits loose as its compartment has collapsed). The remaining porcelain: property of the de László family, thence by descent. Footnotes: Note: Philip Alexius de László was born as Laub Fülöp on 30 April 1869 in Pest, before it was joined with Buda in 1873. He and his brother Marczi took the Hungarian name László in 1891 as a patriotic act, as did many of their fellow countrymen. In 1912 he was ennobled by Emperor Franz Joseph and became known as Philip de László. Judging by the factory marks, the porcelain bearing the gilded L and coronet was commissioned by de László from the Herend porcelain manufactory some time between 1915 and 1930, with the presence of the coronet reflecting de László's ennoblement. By contrast, the porcelain bearing the three gilded Ls was commissioned by Lucy de László née Guinness. The choice of the Herend porcelain manufactory seems a pertinent option for the Hungarian-British de László family, as the manufactory had been recipients of both British and Austro-Hungarian royal patronage, famously having a service commissioned by Queen Victoria after whom the pattern has subsequently been named, and also becoming the official Supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1872. Condition Report: At first glance, the service is smart and presents well, the Windsor Flowers pattern porcelain harmonious with the Fruits Necker porcelain. Upon further inspection a few pieces reveal some condition issues, but generally the decoration is bright and colourful and the gilding is largely intact. The Windsor Flowers porcelain decoration is generally a little more tired and worn with light scratches to decoration, as might be expected from age and use. Some surface dirt can be found to a few pieces including grease and stains.Condition issues are detailed as follows: Windsor Flowers porcelain with gilt Ls - one soup bowl with an impact hairline crack visible to the well and underside, one dessert or salad plate with a hairline crack from well to rim. Windsor Flowers porcelain with purple rims - one soup bowl has an impact hairline crack to the underside, the other has a large staple-repaired crack running from the rim across the well, each of the dessert plates have hairline cracks and one has a large flat chip to the rim. Fruits Necker porcelain - one coffee cup with a chip to rim, the hot water pot with a hairline crack from rim, the milk jug with a missing branch from the handle, the sugar pot cover flower finial with chips to petals, the sugar pot with a chip to rim, the cover for the coffee pot with large losses to the interior rim, one teacup with a large repaired crack running from rim to rim, one coffee cup saucer with a small impact hairline to the underside, one coffee cup underside with possible dirt filled hairline cracks. Apparently, cornflowers were Marie-Antoinette's favourite flower. A dinner plate from this service was sold at Christie's, British and Continental Ceramics, 14 July 2006, lot 68. For a discussion of the Marie-Antoinette service see David Peters, Sevres Plates and Services of the 18th Century (Little Berkhamsted, 2005), Vol. III, pps. 645-646. Condition Report: This service is smart and presents well, but is in need of a good clean, several pieces are quite dirty and greasy.
