Pair of Chinese Longyanmu (tiger-skin wood) side tables, each of square form with stylised carved decoration, with single shelf over a trelliswork base, each signed to base of shelf in characters reading "Used by Chen Lian in the 14th year of the Republican period" (ie 1926) 80cm high x 35cm square (2)  It is believed that this does not relate to the date they were made and is a form of scholarly graffiti inscribed on the furniture by its owner, Chen Lian.The intelligentsia and official class in Imperial China, continuing into the Republican era, enjoyed a very refined lifestyle, practising painting, calligraphy and writing poems, as well as attending to their official duties. And much like the upper middle classes in Britain, they liked to collect antiques and fine furniture. Officials would usually have had a study in which they worked and practised the aforementioned arts - this would have been furnished with antiques and a desk.They also liked to make their own marks of ownership or appreciation on antiques and paintings - for example, Chinese emperors added their seal marks or sometimes wrote poems on famous paintings they owned. Condition Report Overall in good order. One with some slight splitting/separating to square top panel. The other with some similar splitting/separating to the top and also with areas of water damage & staining, Some very minor scuffing to legs and feet, overall with minor flaking to red varnish to underside of fretwork.

A Japanese komai cigarette box. Decorated in nunome-zogan with a parade beneath a pine tree, Mount Fuji in the distance. The sides with various mon and a monogram possibly reading MWM. S Komai calligraphy mark to base alongside engraved flower roundels and birds in flight. W12cm. Condition Report: In decent condition. The detail is still sharp, the hinges open smoothly and there are no significant breakages or dents. Some tarnishing and signs of rusting to the metal. Would benefit from a clean, the colours have slightly faded and there are areas of discolouration. The rims and edges are slightly uneven.

The vendor inherited items from her great grandfather Captain John Dewar (ship master). He was born in Shanghai in 1866 and died in 1950. His wife Susan Smith Oudney (1875-1967) whose father was William Oudney a master mariner owned two clipper ships including 'The Coach Inn'. John and Susan married in Shanghai in 1896.small repair on top, three small chips on top and four small chips on lower part.
