*Manuscript Calligraphy. De Grandis (Tomasso). Saggio di Calligrafia Eseguito da Tomaso de Grandis di Chieti e Dedicato a sua Sacra Maesta 'Francesco il re Del Regno delle due Sicilie ed Alla Maesta' dell'Augusta Regina Maria Sofia Amalia Duchessa di Calabria, no place or date but probably Chieti or Naples, 1859/1860, written and drawn in black ink on thick drawing paper and displaying upwards of 50 calligraphic, pictorial, phantasmagoric, floral, historiated and other ornamental Roman and exotic alphabets, chiefly of majuscules, with four finely drawn allegorical corner-pieces, numerous vignettes of landscapes and figures, floral decorations, pictorial command-of-hand figures, and large portraits of King Francesco II and Queen Maria Sophia of Naples, and Pope Pius IX, with elaborate floral cartouches, a little damage to centre fold with skilful restoration affecting half of the letters "m" and "n" respectively at the foot and a few words of the dedicatory sonnet, both skilfully restored and inked in to match, a few small restorations to the same fold barely affecting written surface, closed tear to right margin, a little spotting, mostly to outer margins, 810 x 1375 mm No published works by De Grandis are recorded and this was possibly intended as a presentation piece to the King and Queen in search of an official post as calligrapher. A quantity of 18th and 19th century English and Oriental ceramics to include an 18th century Caughley 'Salopian' tea bowl and saucer, two Worcester Granger reeded tea bowls, a 17th century Chinese blue and white ladle, a 19th century Cantonese Famille Rose cup and saucer, Chinese 18th and 19th export cups and Oriental-inspired English tea bowls, saucers and cups. CONDITION REPORT Wear to all pieces, tea bowl has rim chip. Rim chips and gilt wear throughout. Saucer with Chinese calligraphy has two minor frits to edge, gilt edging heavily rubbed, most of it missing, wear to gilt areas in centre of bowl and minor paint rub.
A CHINESE INK AND WATERCOLOUR ‘PRUNUS AND INSECT’ SCROLL ATTRIBUTED TO YUAN HONGSONG, 1910 - 2012 the gnarled moss-covered branches painted with clusters of white prunus blossoms amongst early spring leaves, a red dragonfly atop a bare branch with a cricket descending towards another within the lower register of the painting, inscribed with script and two iron red seals, the ivory silk border woven with phoenixes amongst clouds, the seals reading Mian Sheng, a pseudonym adopted by Yuan Hongsong, the calligraphy loosely translating to, ‘following the style of Ju Lian, painted in the autumn of the Gui Chou Year (1973) by Mian Sheng 157cm high, 43cm wide

Il rotolo con carattere unico presenta tre sigilli, quello con la scrittura in corsivo è privo di sigillo. Six redware and Yixing stoneware teapots and covers 18th century and later, English, Chinese and Dutch, one engine turned and with a matched glazed cover, one cylindrical and sprigged with a bird holding a branch in its beak, the other four miniature, one enamelled with peony and one incised with Chinese calligraphy, with an ovoid tea canister, some faults, 18cm max. A CHINESE YIXING ZISHA VASE WITH INCISED CALLIGRAPHY of swollen slab side form, decorated with rocks and calligraphy, moulded fo-dog masks to the shoulders, impressed seal mark, late Qing/early Republic, 19cm high. Condition report Hairline crack not visible, but vase rattles slightly when tapped.
Three 19th century Chinese carved bamboo brush pots, the largest decorated with boats, height 27cm and five calligraphy pens including one with a carved barrel. CONDITION REPORT: Some natural splits and surface wear, otherwise appears good with no further obvious faults, damage or restoration.
