* Chinese Embroidered Robe. A woman's silk informal robe, late Qing Dynasty, dark blue silk robe with long wide sleeves, hand-embroidered overall using polychrome silks, with a design of large medallions of paeonies interspersed with other floral motifs and large moths, sleeves edged with a band of gold silk embroidered with urns and vases of flowers, and a ceramic pot of rolled paper scrolls and calligraphy brushes, hem with paeony flowers disposed at intervals on a lishui stripe border, worked in satin stitch and long and short stitch, with occasional back-stitch and couched gold metallic thread outlines, some small losses to embroidery, lined with pale blue silk (with mottled fading, and some soiling and slight perishing at neck), centre opening, with 3 toggle fasteners, length 108.5 cm (42.75 ins), width cuff to cuff 135 cm (53 ins) QTY: (1)NOTE:Undoubtedly a female calligrapher's robe, denoted by the relatively small size, and the iconography. The paeony flower, so predominant here, symbolises female beauty and love as well as longevity, wealth and status. The image of the tools of a scribe is much less commonly seen, and adds another dimension to our knowledge of the wearer of this robe. There is a long history of female calligraphers in China, but such women have often been overlooked over the centuries, and passed over in favour of their more dominant male counterparts.

ALFRED POWELL (1865-1960) FOR WEDGWOOD & SONS ARTS & CRAFTS WALL CHARGER, 1910-1920 painted and glazed earthenware, decorated by Mabel Tatton, impressed WEDGWOOD, signed in gilt to rim M. TATTONDimensions:47cm diameterNote: Literature: For a similar plate see Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, accession no. C.49-1972 (formerly in the collection of Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read)Note: Powell was inspired by the designs of the Arts & Crafts Movement, and the influence of William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones can be seen in the decoration of this dish: the animals and foliage remind, particularly, of tapestries made by Morris & Co at Merton Abbey. Many of Powell’s designs are based on plant and animal motifs, others feature architectural views and calligraphy. He and his wife Louise Powell also created simpler patterns for factory production during the 1920s-30s. Mabel Tatton started decorating at Etruria for Wedgwoods in 1907 until 1914 when she left to study at Hornsey College, Middlesex. She returned to the firm as head of the painting and enamelling department from 1920 until 1928. Her work was shown at the Paris Exhibition in 1925. The appearance of Tatton's signature in gilt on the rim marks this piece out as an exceptional example of her decorating skills.
JORDI ALCARAZ I TARRADAS (Calella, Barcelona, 1963)."Calligraphy".Wrought iron and cardboard.Signed in the lower corner and titled on the back.Size: 60 x 80 x 17,5 cm.Jordi Alcaraz began his artistic career in the field of sculpture and engraving. He graduated from the Taller de Músics in Barcelona and is a great fan of the plastic arts. He is self-taught in painting, writing and photography. In 2010 he started his project @ para4gatos (on social networks), based on photography, editing exclusively with mobile device applications. During this period he has made around 2000 visual metaphors, and counting. With an ironic tone, he invites the viewer to observation and reflection, to discover the poetry hidden within the most common objects, subjecting them to slight transformations and altering their function, context and habitual uses. During this period he has carried out commissions for major brands such as Schwarzkopf Professional, Harley Davidson and El Terrat de Producciones. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Pamplona, Lisbon, Bilbao and Barcelona. His musical training has led him to work for different groups of the Barcelona music scene such as Zulu 9:30, Pablo Selnik Cuarteto, Eufuria, Sexteto Guardiola, etc .... He currently collaborates with "El Periódico de Cataluña" taking different photographs, always with a poetic tone, about national current affairs. Mayka Navarro, a Barcelona journalist with a long career, defined his work very aptly: "Each image of this virtual photographer from Barcelona is an accurate punch to the senses. Jordi Alcaraz reconverts reality into committed messages that come to life and move us. Everyday objects are transformed into animated information capsules that concentrate so much intensity that sometimes it seems as if they are alive and will come running out at any moment. Since its beginnings, throughout these twenty-five years of activity, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Spain, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Canada and Switzerland, and has been present at some of the most important fairs on the international contemporary art circuit (Arco, Art Basel, Art Frankfurt, Art Cologne, Art Chicago, Art Miami and Arte Lisboa, among others). He is currently represented at the Centre Cultural Contemporani Pelaires in Palma de Mallorca, as well as in various private collections around the world.

The Qianlong Emperor, a member of the Qing dynasty, ruled China from 1736 to 1795, and is remembered to this day as one of the most cultured emperors and one of the most important in terms of art collecting. His long reign was a particularly interesting moment in Chinese history. At that time, the country was the richest and most populous nation in the world. Qianlong was able to preserve and foster his own Manchu warrior and hunter traditions, and combine them with the adoption of Confucian principles of political and cultural leadership, thus achieving an effective and stable government. Indeed, it was his ability to adopt Chinese customs while honouring his Manchu tradition that made him one of the most successful emperors of the Qing dynasty. Qianlong studied Chinese painting, and especially enjoyed the art of calligraphy, highly regarded in this culture, indeed conceived as the highest of the arts.
