Four pairs of Chinese lady’s sleeve-bands, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, coral silk embroidered in Pekin knot stitch; cream damask silk embroidered in Pekin knot stich roundels of flowers and butterflies; blue satin silk embroidered in Pekin knot stich of flowers and phoenix and a pair of cream silk embroidered with fishermen and mountains and calligraphy, various lengths Provenance: From the collection of the author Mrs J.C. Cooper 1905 - 1999 (author of An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols and Taoism: The Way of the Mystic amongst other books). The daughter of a Director of the Chinese Inland Mission, she was born in northern China in 1905 and went to school in China and England before studying Philosophy at St Andrew’s University, Scotland. She became a lecturer in Philosophy, Comparative Religion and Symbolism. Her later years were spent as an author writing from her remote home in the Lake District. Attributed to Qian Zai (1708-1793), Orange Daylily and Rock, scroll, ink and colour on paper, Qian Zai was the rise minister of the Ministry of Rites during the reign of Qianlong and one amongst the most renowned 18th-century poets, inscribed and signed by the artist, with two seals of the artist ‘钱载之印’’择石’, picture size 59cm high x 30cm wide; a Chinese calligraphy scroll, ink on paper, 100cm high x 32cm wide (2) Provenance: private English collection formed by the current owner’s father in the 1920s. Qing dynasty, Qianlong period(1736-1795). The original copy of “Painted enamel Chinese peony and pheasant design pear-shaped vase with Qianlong mark”, which is the key highlights of the collections of Tianjin Museum. In 2005, at the invitation of the Tianjin Museum, it was produced by Wang Hui. After expert evaluation and comparison with the original vase seven times, the craft level has reached the standard of porcelain manufacturing in the Qing Dynasty. Only a batch of 5 successful firings, one of which was permanently collected by the Tianjin Museum, and replaced the authentic daily display. This item is the second one.The vase is small and exquisite, elegant and dignified. The body is light and thin, with painted enamels on the glaze. The top and the bottom of the neck have been decorated with blue plantain leaf designs and the body is decorated in painted enamels, depicting pheasants and peonies, gorgeous color and vivid. The empty white area features a poem in black script. This vase combines the arts of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals.Height 16.3cm, Diameter of rim 4cm, Diameter of foot 5cm
