An early 20th Century Chinese republic period antique porcelain bonsai plant planter jardinière with stand. Hand painted decoration depicting figures with black and white borders and calligraphy to sides. 4 ochre red painted character marks to underside. Complete with scrolled wooden stand. A Chinese porcelain spill vase, of cylindrical form decorated with bird on tree bough, with calligraphy, 29cm H and a further similar brush pot. (2) There is no apparent damage or restoration upon initial inspection, note rubbed gilt to the marked vase and the other does have a star hairline to base but this is not critical.
Seven various Chinese porcelain spill vases brush pots, of cylindrical form in orange with gilt highlights showing flowers and calligraphy, etc. 27cm H, some marked. (7) Upon initial inspection no major losses or damage but one cylinder does have a vertical hairline crack within the body and gilt decoration is worn as seen in the imagery.
A LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY PRESENTATION QUALITY SABRE BY PROSSER, 83cm sharply curved pipe-backed blade with clipped back spear point, etched with damascus style swirls and stylized calligraphy in the talismanic manner with traces of gilt highlights, copper gilt hilt, the langets cast and chased with the head of Medusa, dog's head quillons, tapering rope twist form copper gilt pommel, spirally fluted rhinoceros horn grip, contained in its copper gilt mounted scabbard decorated to match, the upper mount with maker's panel for Prosser. India.- Fagan (Miss, active c. 1830-1850) A scrap album, including items relating to India, China, and the Middle East, including over 15 small Anglo-Indian watercolours of palaces, temples and decorative designs for porcelain, 4 China Trade School pith paper watercolours of birds and plants, and many other illustrations and prints of European interest, several leaves with Arabic text and calligraphy, various sizes, all neatly presented in album, some with losses, tears and handling creases, occasional spotting and browning, purple straight grained morocco, gilt, upper cover with name 'Miss Fagan', gilt, metal clasp lock without key, very worn and rubbed, 4to, [circa 1830s and slightly later].
Coronation of Elizabeth II.- Gardner (Anthony, bookbinder, calligrapher and engraver, 1887-1973) Sketch Map of the Route to be taken by The Royal Procession upon the occasion of The Coronation of Her Majesty Elizabeth II..., calligraphic manuscript with 7 full-page watercolours of the processional route, title and 8pp., calligraphy in blue and red ink, binding no. 384 lettered on lower endpaper, bound in full grey crushed morocco, oval brown morocco inlays with gilt monogram "ER II" stamped on upper cover, gilt Tudor roses and single line gilt borders in corners, gilt fleur-de-lys stamped on spines, g.e., 8vo, calligraphic spiral apologia by Gardner at end, "sketched and bound by for Her Majesty's Minister of Works for the gracious use of her Majesty during her Coronation procession, by Anthony Gardner...", 1953. ⁂ Anthony Gardner was Chief Structural Engineer in the Ministry of Works until his retirement in 1953. Following his retirement, Gardener established his own bookbinding and restoration firm.
NO RESERVE Calligraphy.- Cocker (Edward) Magnum in parvo or The Pens Perfection, second edition, lacking engraved title and the 6pp. letterpress text (supplied in negative photographs), 25 engraved plates including the rare first plate 'The Foundation of Writing', rather soiled and water-stained, first plate soiled and defective at outer margin preserving contemporary ink initials, final plate defective and laid down (no loss to image), some other marginal defects and repairs, modern library morocco-backed cloth, [Wing C4842], John Garrett, [1675]; and another on calligraphy, oblong 4to & 8vo; sold not subject to return (2)⁂ First published in 1672, both editions are scarce. ESTC records only 3 UK copies (BL, National Library of Scotland, and Bodleian Library Oxford), plus 2 in America.
Elizabethan examples of manuscript initials, scripts and proverbs.- [Volume of 26 very fine and elaborate examples of historiated initials and examples of various manuscript scripts with proverbs comprising the 24 letters of the Elizabethan alphabet and 2 symbols], the initials in pen and ink with intricate and intertwining calligraphy and decorated in a wide variety of designs including flowers, leafy sprays, acorns, classical figures, dragons, a crowned king, a bear, a monkey blowing a trumpet, owls, an early Elizabethan aristocratic young woman "A vertvovs woman is a noble gyfte" (wearing a small ruff and an early form of Spanish farthingale dating from the 1560s to 1570s), a jester playing an instrument, birds, a satyr etc., most hand-coloured in muted grey, green and brown watercolour washes, manuscript scripts including a variety of Secretary hands, italic, Chancery, gothic bookhand etc., proverbs drawn from the bible (including "Despise not the coreccion of the lorde" - Proverbs 3 : 11), on paper, on rectos only, ?cut down from a larger work, all ff. edges and corners repaired and many margins reinforced with paper, slightly browned and marked in places, one or two ff. slightly creased, some edges chipped, tipped-in on later album ff., 19th century half morocco, edges and joints rubbed, each f. 305 x 210mm., album folio, Pot watermarks on some sheets [cf. Briquet 12801], 1560s - 70s.⁂ A fine and extremely rare example of Elizabethan art probably drawn and illustrated by someone in the legal profession. Perhaps compiled by an apprentice scrivener to show his dexterity in producing elaborate legal documents with large historiated initials, and in a variety of scripts as required. Evidence that it was executed by a pupil for a master is indicated in the slight roughness of the drawings and letter forms.

Palatino's manual was a more ambitious effort than Arrighi's or Tagliente's... Palatino's models of chancery script are among the handsomest, but are nearly impossible to execute if the writer is a person of modest ability.' Calligraphy.- Watson (Thomas) Copy Book Enriched with Great Variety of the most Usefull & Modish Hands....fitted for the profit and delight of Ingenious Youth, engraved throughout with decorative title and 26 plates (numbered 1-17), the last signed by Elder, some light spotting and soiling, mostly marginal, later half morocco, [cf. Berlin Kat. 5046, 1683 edition], small oblong folio, H. Overton and I. Hoole, [c.1726].⁂ Rare work by the teacher of a writing school at Newport Pagnell, originally published in 1683 and distinguished by the large capital letters on each page. This edition is not listed by ESTC.

ZUOREN WU: (1908-1997) Chinese Painter. After Zuoren´s Giant Panda postage stamps design in 1963 for the People´s Republic of China, Giant Panda were established as the emblem of the new China. A permanent member of the National People´s Congress since 1954. Attractive bold black ink signed autograph statement by Zuoren, in Chinese calligraphy, one page, to the blank verso of a postcard, Beijing, 1989, to Michael Levin. To the front showing a printed image of the Eiffel tower, on its centenary, 1889-1989, above the printed text "J´ai 100 ans!" ("I have 100 years!"). Zuoren states `For the worldwide diffused ray, remain standing for 1000 autumns. Commemoration of the Eiffel tower centenary.´ Accompanied by the original envelope postmarked and post-stamped with attractive Chinese stamps. VG £400-600
XU ZHIMO: (1897-1931) Famous Chinese free-thinking Poet. Widely considered one of the most renowned romantic poets of 20th century Chinese literature. Xu Zhimo died at the early age of 34 in an airplane crash.Rare and exceptional attractive calligraphy autograph album, 11.5 x 15, twenty-four pages, fifteen of them showing carefully written Chinese texts, annotations or statements by various eminent Chinese personalities, mostly writers. The hard cover album, with foldable inside large pages, contains two sets of attractive original handwritten Chinese calligraphy, including Xu Zhimo, Chinese calligraphy, paint brush, being a "Long Life" congratulation to Yu Shangwan for his 30th birthday, signed to the left in his hand; Lu Ding Yi (1906-1996) Chinese Politician. One of the most important leaders of the communist party, vice-Premier and Minister of Culture of China in the 60´s. Lu Ding Yi has drawn, paint brush, in Chinese calligraphy, "Ji Yu", praise to Xia Zhi Gan for his charity works; Qin Shou Ou (1908-1993) Chinese Writer. A successful writer during war time, author of Qiu Haitang ("Begonia"); Guo Yi Wen (1899- ?) Chinese Poet, etc... Bearing to the right pages, opposite to the left pages authors´ written text, annotations in the hand of Xia Zhigan. VG £5000-8000 The present album provenance being from the art collection of Xia Zhigan (1917- ?), Chinese art collector and charitarian, member of the Xi Lin society. Former Shangbao journalist until 1949, he worked at the museum of historic literature in Shangai. Yu ShangWan (1897-1970) Chinese Theorist. In 1926 ShangWan was Professor at Shanghai GuangHua university. At that time and together with Xu ZhiMo they established New Moon bookstore, and translated several well-known western literature and drama.
