A paper prayer scroll with polychrome panels and calligraphic text, long text in horizontal lines of small Nasta'liq (?) script (about 0.75mm height) within ruled borders with red boxed headers. From the collection of a North West London gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. Nasta'liq is the predominant scrip of Persia and was developed in Iran in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is also popular in Turkic speaking parts of the world, and was especially popular in the Ottoman empire, and is used mainly for writing poetry and religious texts, or as an art form in itself. Calligraphy takes on a form of sacred art in Islam due to the prohibition of pictorial ornaments, especially in the Qu'ran. 30 grams, 3.5cm x 7m approx. (276 approx."). Fine condition, torn.
