An early to mid-20th century leather bound commonplace book, containing some autographs, including a signed b/w press photograph of Arthur Askey, Ursula Hanway, other entertainment personalities, best wishes and felicitations of fellow students of Watford Art School, original compositions, drawn and painted, presumably from school contemporaries, etc., c. 1940, oblong 16mo; another, earlier, compiled from Christmas 1908 to 1914 with original prose and verse compositions, sketches and watercolour studies, Chinese calligraphy, etc., oblong 12mo (2)
A group of small silver comprising:- an Egyptian compact with engraved Arabic calligraphy; an English engine-turned compact; a pair of mounted cut-glass salts, Birmingham, 1914; a mounted cut-glass scent bottle; a Continental pill box with English import marks; a small cushion-shaped pill box by Levi & Salaman, Birmingham, 1901; a Continental leaf-engraved vesta case stamped "925"; a Victorian folding fruit knife with mother-of-pearl handle carved with diaperwork, by George Unite, Birmingham, 1860; and a silver-handled folding miniature comb by Levi & Salaman, Birmingham, 1891. Two Fatimid textile fragments Egypt, 8th century . One embroidered with red calligraphy over cream ground; the other embroidered with an animal within oval cartouche with alternated colored round pattern. Fatimid textiles are very rare because of the perishability of the material but, since they were much appreciated in the West, they can be detected in churches tresors. Various measurements. Cm 16,00 x 17,50.
A Chinese informal silk robe, early 20th century, heavily embroidered with gilt and polychrome threads in the 'Hundred Boys' pattern, with twelve roundel's each depicting an imperial five clawed dragon, the lower section with lishui and lobed cartouche panels depicting various mythical beats and scenes,106cm long x 177cm wide approx (at fault) CONDITION REPORT: PLEASE SEE ADDITIONAL IMAGES FOR CONDITION. Interior lining showing areas of staining throughout (noticeably the sleeves both externally and internally) Interior lining with inked calligraphy (see images). Some sections to the exterior show areas of stress and stretch marks noting the lower gilt lishui stripes. Multiple threads loose. Some fading to the exterior of varying degrees. Tie fastening. Some creased sections. DO NOT BID UNLESS YOU ARE COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH THE CONDITION.
A circa 1900 Persian white metal three piece tea set comprising a circular tapering teapot, overall embossed with numerous figural scenes and with band of Arabic calligraphy, raised on four outswept legs on paw feet, length 19cm including spout and ebonised angled handle, a twin handled sugar bowl and a cream jug, each piece with Arabic character mark to base, combined approx 30.6ozt (3).
A fine and unusual 19th Century gilt hilted Indian sword, 67cm wavy Wootz steel blade decorated with panels of gold damascene at the forte, a further gold mark just above and a narrow panel of calligraphy along the back edge, the hilt of characteristic Khanjar form with a bird's head pommel, the whole decorated with panels of gold damascene scrolling foliage and flower heads, bordered with panels of geometric designs, contained in its velvet wrapped wooden scabbard.
A 19th Century presentation Moroccan Nimcha, 74cm fullered blade, characteristic white metal mounted hilt with exaggerated downturned quillons, beaked horn grip with segmented white metal pommel cap, contained in its white metal scabbard in the Moroccan fashion, profusely decorated over all with panels of scrolling foliage, the rear of the scabbard with two panels of calligraphy.
