UMAYYAD, TEMP. AL-WALID I (86-96h)Dirham, ‘Dashtaq’ 96hOBVERSE: In margin: point below b of duriba and two points above t of sitt in dateWEIGHT: 2.53gREFERENCE Unpublished (cf Klat 340.1 [Dimashq])CONDITION: Attempted piercing at 8 o’clock on obverse, otherwise very fine and apparently unpublished NOTE: The distinctive calligraphy, coupled with the points placed exactly as on regular Damascus dirhams, surely confirms that ‘Dashtaq’ is an engraver’s error for Dimashq and not a mint in its own right.
UMAYYAD, TEMP. ‘ABD AL-MALIK B. MARWAN (65-86h)Dirham, al-Rayy 82hREVERSE: In field: letter wa placed at the end of the second lineWEIGHT: 2.11gREFERENCE: cf Klat 397CONDITION: Some surface corrosion and staining, about fine and extremely rare NOTE: Two specimens of this date recorded by Klat. Although an ancient piece, the calligraphy and anomalous position of the wa at the end of the second line of the reverse field suggest that it may be an unofficial issue of some kind.
UMAYYAD, TEMP. ‘ABD AL-MALIK B. MARWAN or AL-WALID IDirham, Wasit ‘73h’OBVERSE: In margin: decade of date written sin-‘ayn-ya-nun (sic, either for saba‘in or tisa’in)WEIGHT: 2.59gCONDITION: Good very fine and unusual NOTE: The calligraphy on the obverse is executed to a high standard, while the reverse, although still fully literate, is somewhat coarser in style. It seems that the coin is likely to be an unofficial issue of some kind, possibly from North Africa. It is curious that the only obvious spelling error should be in the date, particularly since this produces an ‘impossible’ reading for the type. Could this be a deliberate attempt to conceal when, and possibly by whom, the piece was produced? Umayyad dirhams with similar ‘impossible’ dates in the 70’s are also known from other mints, including an example of ‘Marw 74h’ sold in these rooms (Important Coins of the Islamic World, 23 April 2012, lot 61).
