A large Japanese wood carving of Gama-Sennin, the god stands contemplating his toad, holding a gnarled staff, the base with three lines of calligraphy, minor repairs, 60cm.Gama-Sennin is a benign Japanese sage who is always accompanied by a toad and can assume the shape of a snake, or change his skin and become young again. He possesses the secret of immortality.
EDWARD BAWDEN. (1903-1989). Watercolour and ink, stylised figure of a jester on a black cartouche, signed in monogram, 11.5cm x 7.5cm, framed; an edition of “Edward Bawden” The Penguin Modern Painters, 1946, sixteen colour and sixteen black and white plates; a handwritten letter from Bawden’s mother discussing the issuing of the accompanying book, Bawden’s appointment as an Associate of the Royal Academy on 28th October 1947 and his receiving a CBE from the King for his war services, letter dated 19.12.47 from the artist’s parental home in Felsted, Essex. (3). The vendor’s family were close friends with the both the artist and his family. The vendor believes this work was executed early in Bawden’s career prior to 1928. As a student at the Royal College of Art Bawden studied heraldry and manuscripts and developed a strong interest in calligraphy and illumination. For his final diploma in book illustration he produced designs which were likened to playing card motifs.

(35.5 x 797.5cm) A handscroll of the Ch'ing-ming Festival - a panoramic presentation of provincial life with numerous figures, animals and shipping along the banks of a river leading into a walled city; gouache on silk backed onto paper and woven silk end piece; the central panorama flanked by two calligraphy panels, and a drawing in ink of a dragon; total scroll length 532in. (1351cm) contained in glass case on carved hardwood feet with bronze dragon supports. Provenance: The Lionel Jacobson Collection, The Sir Bernard Eckstein Collection, Oldlands Hall, Fairwarp, Sussex. Railway interest - late C19th / early C20th cast iron locomotive boiler door taken from an abandoned locomotive on the Hejaz railway in western Saudi Arabia, the scene of conflict involving T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia), with Arabic calligraphy, 6.5 by 10.2ins. (overall). This lot is accompanied by a photograph of the vendor holding the door while standing in front of the locomotive from which it came.
Chubb, Ralph Nicolas The heavenly cupid or the true paradise of loves. Fair Oak, Hants: published by author, 1932-33, folio, one of 7 copies, illustrated by the author, title and frontispiece hand coloured, original half green morocco gilt with corduroy boards by G. Frewin, some slight rubbing to head and tail of backstrip Note: Reid A10b. This is one of seven copies of Chubb's scarcest self-published works on the beauty of male youth. Thought to be Chubb's "most harmonious marriage of writing and drawing... with lilting calligraphy and simple luminous figures leaning into or arching over the texts. " (Smith, 2004) This volume is made up of several parts, including "The book of loves" (pp.133-76), "Midway thro' life" (pp. 93-132), and the remaining philosophical prose section (pp. 1-92 and 177-88).l Chubb insisted on corduroy, the stuff of country trousers, for the binding. It was not a success and was not repeated.

Makers mark A. R., Moscow 1888-99. * Alexander von Solodoff, Russian Gold and Silver lists an A. R. mark (No. 234) as a masterman of Peter Carl Faberge.
