Pair of Chinese mirror matched porcelain Famille Rose baluster 'Landscape Vases', each depicting a pavilion by a lake surrounded by rocks and trees in a mountainous landscape with boats, figures and calligraphy, all between a stylised 'petal band' above the foot with 'Ruyi' and scrolling flower bands to the shoulders, neck and below the mouth rim. Qianlong four character mark in a double square border to the bases. 20th century. 31cm high approx. (2) (B.P. 21% + VAT) No obvious damage.

Hu Yongkai (Chinese, b. 1945). Ink and watercolor painting depicting a woman with a fan seated on a couch in front of a calligraphy filled screen. Next to her rests a wooden stand with a box of text, one of which is open that she appears to be reading. A white cat lounges on the cushion opposite her.Sight; height: 18 1/2 in x width: 18 3/4 in. Framed; height: 25 in x width: 24 3/4 in.Condition: No visible tears, losses, or restoration under UV light. No visible foxing or soiling. The color is bold and bright. There is light craquelure began to form along the green areas and along the upper left quadrant. Along the light blue-grey background, along the upper right and lower part of the painting, there are areas where the paint is not applied evenly; however, it appears to be original to the painting. Framed under plexiglass. Inspected out of frame; however, the verso could not be inspected due to the nature of how the artwork is framed- the top of the mat is glued to the other side of the mat. Wear to the frame.
Chinese fan painting after Ding Yanchen (Chinese, 1829-1873), ca. 1860-1870. Ink and color on paper depicting a flowering branch with calligraphy along the right edge. With a red seal along the right edge below the calligraphy. Housed in a frame under glass.Provenance: The collection of Bruce Dayton and Ruth Stricker Dayton - Selections from The Marsh, Minnetonka, Minnesota.Sight; height: 9 1/2 in x width: 20 in. Framed; height: 15 in x width: 25 in.Condition: Fan shows numerous areas of damage and wear from use as a fan. The fan has been mounted on a piece of paper, which shows extensive foxing, visible by shining a light through the paper fan one can see several repairs there appear to be some minor losses to the top edge of the fan. Paper shows numerous creases as associated with fans that were actually used and unmounted.

Decorated with birds amongst flowers and with two lines of calligraphy along the sides. Each stamped in red along the underside with a four-character mark.Each, height: 10 in x diameter: 2 1/2 in.Condition: No visible chips, cracks, or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. No chips to the rim and footrim. Very light wear throughout. Color glazing had faded as expected from age. Wear along the underside, consistent with age and use.

Framed; height: 15 in x width: 25 in.Condition: The fan has been laid down on to a paper backing. There is a series of losses throughout, visible in the lot listing. Light scratches and signs of wear throughout, consistent with age and use as a fan. Creases throughout consistent with use as a fan. Some light wear to the paper backing including a large rip along the lower right corner, some creases, and some light stains. It is hinged with framer's tape along the top left and right edges; the tape along the top right edge has broken and it is loose on this edge. There is a pencil inscription along the verso of the paper reading "L79.190.31." Light wear to the frame; framed under glass.
Chinese Republic PRC porcelain vase decorated with a bird perched amongst flowering branches. A second bird swoops downwards. With four lines of calligraphy painted along the sides. With a six-character Qianlong mark in underglaze blue along the bottom.Height: 8 in x diameter: 4 in.Condition: No visible chips, cracks, or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. Very light wear throughout. There are a few scattered areas where the color glazing has faded. No chips to the rim and footrim. The footrim is lightly toned. Along the interior, there are accretions adhered to the underside.
One large two panel Japanese ink on paper calligraphy screen. Translated the text reads, "Mountains and rivers, one color stretching three thousand li, I lean against the building [waiting] for the wine’s strength to disappear." This is a poem by the poet Gao Shitan (d. 1146). It conjures the image of a drunken poet, leaning against a pavilion in the wilderness, looking out over an unbroken stretch of mountains. The back with a patterned medallion decoration.Provenance: The collection of Bruce Dayton and Ruth Stricker Dayton - Selections from The Marsh, Minnetonka, Minnesota.Each, height: 68 in x width: 34 1/2 in x depth: 3/4 in.Condition: The screen is structurally sound and stable. The ink is bold and deep. General wear throughout consistent with age and use. There are many long cracks throughout the work; some of which show evidence of restoration. Along each panel there is a crack that runs vertically through the center. There is discoloration to the paper throughout. The silk border is in generally good condition; there are some small creases throughout. Some wear including small chips and losses to the wooden border. The paper backing is in fair condition. There are small scuffs, stains, creases, and a few small tears throughout.

Framed; height: 15 in x width: 25 in.Condition: The fan has been affixed to a paper backing. Some losses to the gilt and painted decoration throughout. No apparent restorations, rips, tears, or creases. Creases and tears to the paper backing along all corners and edges, not visible when the matboard is present. The paper backing is hinged along the top right corner; the hinge has come loose along the top left corner. There is a tideline along the lower edge of the matboard and paper backing; this does not seem to affect the fan itself. Light wear to the frame; framed under glass.

Curtis "Curt" Dunnavan (1926-2022) was a passionate world traveler and avid collector. It was through his travels that he was inspired to begin a lifelong relationship with the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), becoming a major sponsor of the institute and facilitating the growth of their Asian art department, which is now one of the best in the country. His generous donations to Mia allowed them to establish a fund for the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, one of the few endowed positions of this type in the museum field. He additionally served as a trustee of the institute, advocating for its operational growth. In its turn, the museum established a gallery named in his honor in recognition for his endowment fund and numerous contributions to their collection. The selections here showcase his talent and breadth of collecting, ranging from ancient statues to 19th-century woodblock prints. A LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY BURMESE DHA, 61.5cm blade profusely decorated in silver with panels of scrolling foliage, courtly figures, hunting scenes and calligraphy, characteristic silver niello hilt decorated with two bands of dancing figures, contained in its plated copper scabbard.
A 19TH CENTURY OTTOMAN OR PERSIAN SHAMSHIR OR SWORD, 74cm sharply curved double fullered blade with clipped back tip, finely decorated in gold with panels of flowers, foliage and calligraphy on either side, characteristic gilt brass hilt with two-piece riveted horn grips, the crossguard with central chiselled foliate panel, contained in its gilt brass mounted wooden scabbard with velum bindings, the mounts embossed and chased with geometric designs, complete with leather and rope suspension straps.
A 19TH CENTURY TURKISH OR OTTOMAN JAMBIYA, 29cm curved fullered blade inlaid in gold with a panel of geometric designs and calligraphy, characteristic carved wooden hilt with filigree pommel cap and two large domed filigree rivets, contained in its red velvet wrapped wooden scabbard with white metal mounts decorated to match.
A GOOD LARGE 19TH CENTURY BALKAN OR OTTOMAN JAMBIYA, 27cm curved blade with raised medial ridge, inlaid with a large panel of yellow metal inlaid calligraphy to either side of the forte, characteristic carved walrus hilt, contained in its heavy white metal scabbard profusely and finely decorated with foliate and geometric designs in filigree work.
A GOOD LARGE 19TH CENTURY OTTOMAN JAMBIYA, 35cm sharply curved finely watered steel blade with raised medial ridge, decorated with panels of calligraphy to either side of the forte, the Bosnian influenced walrus hilt probably 18th Century, contained in its white metal mounted cloth wrapped wooden scabbard decorated with geometric designs in wrigglework.

Yang Borui, et al, 19th century, a Chinese hanging scroll with two calligraphies and a landscape. Yang Borui active in the Daoguang and Xianfeng periods, 1821-1861. Three fan pictures mounted as a hanging scroll. Upper calligraphy signed Wiechen, sealed Weng Weichen, W51cm. Middle calligraphy signed Wu Shizeng, sealed Weng Weichen, seal, W26.1cm. Lower landscape, ink and colour on gold flecked paper, signed Yang Borui, W50.2cm. Condition Report: CR the top most right corner has a minor rip, however the scroll is otherwise in remarkably good order the are some very minor signs of age to the rest of the scroll. photos should show all
